Contradictions (1984)

1984 Contradictions To contradict something is to oppose it. For example to call the Pope an atheist, is indeed a contradiction. Winston Smith, who is a main character in the novel 1984 by George Orwell, works in the Ministry of Truth. But does the name of the department mean exactly what it says it is? In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, he explains everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. Orwell divided ministries into fours led by Big Brother; Ministry of Plenty, Ministry of Truth, Ministry of Love, and the Ministry of Peace. The ministries help keep society “stable” and no one will rebel. The Ministry of Plenty makes sure everyone gets what they need and causes economic shortage. They make sure supplies are sent to them and give them to the Inner Party and they give the rest of the low class whatever is left. The ministries basically starve others who aren’t as fortuned as they are. Even though the ministry is controlling over the amount of food and drink the people get, those people would get tortured if they rebel, but would continue to obey the ministry in order to survive. The Ministry of Truth has a records department where Winston Smith works, and it changes history when it doesn’t seem right. For example, Winston rewrites propaganda articles that match the Party’s historical version. He also changes an article about Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford. The ministry also tries to get rid of endless drivel like pornography or anything of sexual sort. The ministry is far from honest so they change history and vaporize people who double-think (go against Big Brother). The Ministry of Love is anything but love, it is torture and the center of the Inner Party’s dreadful activities. In this ministry, they also make sure that people do not “double-think.” For example Winston Smith was double-thinking and was having an affair with Julia. They were caught by the Thought Police and were sent to the Ministry of Love. At that point, Winston was tortured by O'Brien. He physically and mentally tortured Winston. He was to believe that 2 + 2 = 5 and not 4.
When controlling parties take over and manipulate others, those people may rebel and disagree, but yet, they will continue obey and follow them. The Ministry of Peace is always in war. It serves as the defense government in Oceania and in charge with the armed forces. Peace means to be hand and hand with one another not at each other’s throats. It is to be believed that war is strength.
George Orwell writes about a negative utopia that deals with survival of the fittest. The four ministries are not beneficial to anyone but the Inner Party. Being privileged, like the Inner Party, is unfortunate for parties beneath them. The Ministry of Plenty says they’re there to help with supplies but the lower class gets the “scraps,” The Ministry of Truth changes history into a whole new story because Big Brother is never wrong, The Ministry of Love is a torture chamber with no windows but darkness and the last place someone wants to be, and the Ministry of Peace is nothing more than war. Survival in Oceania is crucial. . Independence and will are replaced by a fear of, and faith in, the Party; indeed, individual thought has become so alien the population accepts that the Party has made it a crime.
