Contrast Essay: Romeo and Juliet
Contrast Essay: Romeo and Juliet

Often times people say that William Shakespeare was and still is a legend. They are correct. It is amazing how Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet written centuries ago can be better than Franco Zefferelli's movie production of Romeo and Juliet, which had much better technology to work with only decades ago.
Although the movie appeared better, it left out some major parts. The play had better mood and plot details which made it much more dramatic and by far a better presentation.

One major difference between the play and the movie occurs in mood. An example of this is the marriage scene. In the marriage scene of the play, Romeo and
Juliet act very serious. The reader can tell this by the way the two speak.
Romeo says that the Holy Words the Friar speaks can make something without an equal (Act II, Scene 6, Line 4) which is a very intelligent thing to say.
Whereas, in the movie they kiss and giggle the entire time. This leads the viewer to believe that Franco Zefferelli wanted the two to look like fools, that they could not do anything the way it is normally done because they are children in search of quick love. This is bad because it is not very realistic. In real-life, young adults would take the matter seriously because they know it is a major step in life. Because the play is not entirely trying to make the two look bad, it is the better production.

Another major difference in the mood of the play and the movie is in the funeral scene. The funeral scene of the play is a very serious event. Juliet's family is very upset and think that they are the cause of her "death". Also, the Friar soothes the family of the loss of young Juliet's life (Act IV, Scene 5, Line 65). However, in the movie version of the funeral scene, again everyone is sad but this time the Friar lets out a giggle as he pretends to pray for Juliet. This is a major difference because if someone had seen the Friar giggle, it may have changed the

He made each character more three-dimensional, gave context to certain scenes, and gave agency to the female characters. Elements of Beneatha and Walter's relationship, such as their sibling dynamic, were given a little too much attention, but that isn't distracting until it overpowers the rest of the storyline. The other two main changes added to the story and enhanced the characters so that they seemed more relatable to the audience. Even though a few scenes were removed, those scenes were not essential to the play as a whole; they only added to specific parts of the story. The movie as a whole stayed true to the framework of the play while enriching the story for a modern…

After Romeo got kicked out of Verona, Juliet was upset and didn’t know what to do, so friar was keeping Romeo in the basement until Juliet came to see him. The priest told them the plan that Romeo had to go to a different town to live until he got the prince to let him back in Verona. Juliet was upset because Romeo was kicked out of Verona, but her father thought she was sad because of Tybalt’s death. So he arranged a marriage not knowing that she already married to Romeo. Juliet said she didn’t want to marry Paris. Her father got really angry and told her she will marry him or be kicked out of the house. “Go home, be careful, say you will marry him, sleep alone without the nurse, drink this vile of liquid that will put you in a death-like coma for 42 hours. Then, when you go in the family vault when the 42 hours are up, Romeo and I will be there to get you to Mancha with Romeo.” (2, 3 6) Friar is telling Juliet how to get out of marrying Paris. She wouldn’t have to do this if Friar Lawrence had just said no to this in the first place. Friar sends a letter to Romeo to tell him of the plan, but he doesn’t get the letter so he believes that Juliet is dead. Romeo then goes to an apothecary to get a poison that will kill him so he can be with Juliet. Poison has brought him to an immediate end. He killed himself to be with her, so she picked up his dagger and drove it though…

After the Friar found out that both Romeo and Paris had died. He went to check on Juliet who was depressed because of the sight she was seeing. The Friar tried to persuade Juliet into coming with him to the sisterhood of holy nuns. Instead he ran away because someone was coming near Juliet’s tomb, to which caused the death of Juliet: “Come, come away. Thy husband in thy bosom there lies dead, And paris too. Come, I’ll dispose of thee, Among a sisterhood of holy. Stay not to question, for the watch is coming. Come, go, good Juliet, I dare no longer stay.” ( 5.3 166 - 171 ) and “ go, get out of here, I’m not going anywhere, ( Exit Friar Lawrence ).” ( 5.3 172 ) The quotes that were added were involved in the topic, because it shows that the Friar was too afraid and ran off without knowing the choices that he had just made. It also shows that the Friar made the error of leaving Juliet alone with Romeo’s dagger in her tomb: “O happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rust and let me die. (stabs herself with ROMEO’s dagger and dies)” ( 5.3 182 - 184 ) as well as being too eager to leave. If he just use brute force or give her that charm then maybe she would have went with him and that the death of another child would have not…

Last but not least, the friar is cowardly. He proves this characteristic in Act V. When Juliet is ‘dead’, the friar plans to visit her in the Capulet tomb and take her to his cell until Romeo can take her back to Mantua. When he gets to the tomb though, Romeo is already dead and guards are on their way. When the friar “hears some noise,” (Act V, scene iii, line 151) he is frightened and forced to leave. He then tells Juliet “I’ll dispose of thee among a sisterhood of holy nuns.” (Act V, scene iii, lines 156-157) Of course, Juliet refuses after she sees Romeo laying on the…
