Control In One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
As we continue to read and analyse One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, we stumble upon several powerful episodes that bring new dimensions to the book and challange our perception of its characters. In my opinion, among those breaking points is a scene that depicts Mack Murphy’s attempt to lift the Control Panel. That episode not only holds a profound metaphoric meaning, but also becomes critical for all the characters in the novel.
The name of the Panel itself (the capital c Control Panel) suggests that Mack Murphy’s struggle to lift it epitomizes his battle with the authorities, the Big Nurse and the Combine. Furthermore, as the attempt is made in front of the other patients, the struggle provides the Acutes with a physical manifistation

Mcmurphy breaking the picture window was a turning point in the story. The picture window was a prized possession of Nurse Ratched. It was the difference between her and the patients. She was on one side of the window while the patients were on the more unfortunate side. In a therapy session, R.P breaks the window, in the movie and in the novel, to get cigarettes. The glass breaking wasn't only a turning point in the story, but also for Mcmurphy. McMurphy became a larger than life character to the patients.…

McMurphy and Chief struggle throughout Cuckoo’s nest at gaining their independence as the Id and the Ego. However, Big Nurse realizes that her machinery methods are not as effective on others. She sees the flaws with the combine, and that is why her ego diminishes in the book. Because the rules were so strict with the ward, patients figured that “Sometimes a manipulator’s own ends are simply the actual disruption of the ward for the sake of disruption” (27;…

Determination is an important character trait a hero must possess. Randle McMurphy demonstrates his determination through the efforts McMurphy endured to give his fellow patients their own strength and courage. When fighting the black boys the odds were against his favour, three to one. His perseverance though this unfair and outnumbered fight was admirable. Even though “McMurphy had red marks on the head and shoulder” he “didn’t seem to be hurt. He kept coming, taking ten blows for one” (Kesey 230). Although it was obvious McMurphy could not win this fight, his strong-will kept his aggression intact which inspired all the patients of the ward. McMurphy’s dedication to the patients gave Chief Bromden the courage to fight alongside McMurphy and McMurphy gained the trust and respect of the other men. McMurphy’s determined persona is also shown through his devotion to not succumb to Nurse Ratched. Having the knowledge of Nurse Ratched having the ability to execute punishments as she pleases, McMurphy…

When a person is born, they are taught to be themselves and that they are free. However, as time goes on, society deems what “themselves” should be. In One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kessey, a story is told about a new patient, McMurohy, who arrives into an asylum ward and causes trouble. Much like the world today, there is a force of individuality and a force of conformity. In the book, the main character, Chief Bromden, must decide on whether he wants to become a minion to society or have his own free will. When society forces social norms and demands obedience, there is an opposing force of individuality that rebels back within them. In this community, a person has to decide whether they are going to conform to what they are told…

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey during a time in our society when pressures of our modern world seemed at their greatest. Many people were, at this time, deemed by society’s standards to be insane and institutionalized. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is set in a ward of a mental institution. The major conflict in the novel is that of power. Power is a recurring and overwhelming theme throughout the novel. Kesey shows the power of women who are associated with the patients, the power Nurse Ratched has, and also the power McMurphy fights to win. By default, he also shows how little power the patients have.…

There have been many struggles in history between authority and those who oppose it. The most obvious and most common example is revolutions against governments. We live in a society where stability and assimilation are not just recommended, but also enforced. We have the right for civil disobedience, so long as it is non-violent and within reason. In the book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, R.P McMurphy, a "brawling, gambling man" enters a mental asylum in Oregon, and begins to wage war "on behalf of his fellow inmates". However he finds himself at odds with Nurse Ratched, a strict, manipulative and methodical woman who runs the ward like a "precision-made machine". The book follows McMurphy's actions that constantly clash with the Nurse, and what she represents: authority. By the end of the book, there are many…

The advancement of technology over the last decade has been used to further security methods in society. Devices such as surveillance systems in stores have caught suspects and decreased crime, but only by a mere 0.05% (Welsh, Farrington) (specifically in Chicago, which currently has 15,000 cameras throughout the city). So, does this implementation of surveillance really make people behave? The texts “Panopticism” by Michel Foucault and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey both focus on how to make people behave. Foucault's theory explains that if surveillance is used on people in seclusion, the authorities will claim ultimate control. Kesey’s novel challenges this theory once new ward member McMurphy is transferred in, as he provokes…

In my opinion the main theme of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is conformity. The patients at this mental institution, or at least the one in the Big Nurse's ward, find themselves on a rough situation where not following standards costs them many privileges being taken away. The standards that the Combine sets are what makes the patients so afraid of a change and simply conform hopelessly to what they have since anything out of the ordinary would get them in trouble. Such conformity is what Mc Murphy can not stand and makes him bring life back to the ward by fighting Miss Ratched and creating a new environment for the patients. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest represents…

One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest demonstrates a particularly recalcitrant person, McMurphy, whose sanity symbolized by his outspoken merriment, , and utter confidence stands in dissimilarity to what Ken Kesey implies ironically and catastrophically is an insane institution controlled by Nurse Ratched. The insanity of the institution is foregrounded when a man, Maxwell Taber, who asks a simple question, is tortured and rendered inhuman; although, it is not the case in Part One, Chapter Fifteen. It is a Catch-22; only a sane man would question an irrational system, but the act of questioning means his sanity will inevitably be compromised. The choice of rational decision, theme of false diagnosis of insanity, and an establishment of a collective numbering versus the individual is…
