Select a topic (or issue) to research that is “controversial” in some way, meaning that it has the power to incite multiple and/or conflicting viewpoints. You must research the topic, formulate your own opinion on the topic, and write an essay that persuades your reader why your opinion is valid.
I encourage you to choose a controversial topic that genuinely interests you, one you have always wanted to learn more about. You could choose a topic that relates to your major or workplace or even a topic that relates to one of your personal hobbies. Because you’ll be integrating outside research into your essay, I’ll specifically be looking to see that you can effectively integrate sources using summary, paraphrase, and quotation strategies. You must also give credit to your outside sources using correctly formatted in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
Please use the first-hand “I” only when it is absolutely necessary to your argument, such as when you want to interject firsthand observations and experiences into the essay.
