Chapter 5 describes how, within the last century, mounting scholarly evidence has exposed institutional flaws within our judicial and police systems, resulting in the convictions of innocent persons for capital crimes. In some cases, overzealous behavior by police and prosecutors, led to the imprisonment of “factually” innocent defendants. While police sometimes coerced confessions or failed to conduct full investigations, prosectors and judges failed to evidence which might exonerate the defendant. Other judicial violations found through study included failure to follow courtroom procedures related to rule of law. One of the first wrongful conviction initiatives was through a congressional investigation in 1912. Although a noble undertaking for its time, the reports was flawed in its evidentiary compilation. The data was poorly collected and its findings poorly deduced. According to the report, no innocent person had been executed by the Federal government.…

Deoxyribonucleic acid, also known as DNA contains genetic information and is found within the chromosome of human cells. After countless hours of research on thethis fairly new phenomenon it was Sir Alec Jeffereys of England who developed a technology that was based solely on DNA in 1985. DNA plays a major role in technology, it is used for identification, and it has been a leading source in identifying biological samples such as saliva, urine, blood, semen and hair. All of these samples have been extremely helpful with government, federal, state and even private agencies…
In his work he says that officers operate in an environment that on a frequent basis where officers are alone in a community where there are citizens their presence is needed, Research in communities show that officers must make quick decisions and usually without input from other sources. Although there is a chain of command these acts of discretion must be done without going up the chain of command. Goldstein (1977) and Walker and Katz (2002) also point out that the very nature of “the law” is such that, in many cases, officers discretion extends to interpreting the meaning of the statutory text. It becomes, therefore, impossible to enforce the law equally due to the wide interpretation that can be a particular law”.…

The Criminal Justice system in the United States date back to colonial days when the citizens were subject to the laws and rules of the British. Many times the laws and subsequent punishment were not always fair and just](para. 1). Policing and technology has a lot to do with these changes. Nevertheless, the goal and urgency of protecting the community and it’s citizens has not changed, but has only gotten stronger to fulfill. Technology will only cause improvements with the fight to deter crime. As crime increases, so will technology. As technology increases, so will crime. Advancements of technology will also change policing as well. Laws will become more strict, making it harder for criminals to fight…
All in all, the 20th century played a huge impact on the criminal justice system through the Cleveland Survey, the expansion of the American police, and the Model Penal Code.
