Future Leaders of Marines,

You are entering the Officer selection process at an extremely competitive time. The
Marine Corps is currently accepting the fewest number of officer candidates that it has in the last eleven years and the number of qualified individuals who desire that coveted ticket to
Officer Candidates School (OCS) only continues to increase. The OCS selection board evaluates applicants based upon three categories; 25% of their evaluation is Physical Fitness, 25% is
Academics, and 50% is Leadership. While Leadership is the majority of the aggregate score, sound academics and physicality must be ensured before any leadership qualities can be highlighted. Not coincidentally, this 25/25/50 criteria used to evaluate Candidates at OCS and is exactly how I evaluate applicants who work with Officer Selection Team Milwaukee.

The selection board has the unique challenge of selecting only a few Candidates from a pool of many highly qualified applicants who all have high Grade Point Averages (GPAs), high standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), Physical Fitness Test (PFT) scores near 300, and long lists of accolades, accomplishments, and leadership experience. Because of this, the board is using what is known as the "whole person" concept to make its selections. i.e. What does this applicant look like as a whole, beyond

Selection is the second stage in a normal organization entry scheme and starts at the end of recruitment. It involves identifying candidates who meet key requirements through a battery of tests and purposeful interviews. The selection policy of an organization determines the procedures that should be utilized in picking the right person for available job opening therein. In its absence, selection would depend on the whims and caprices of the managers. This process should be as thorough as the budget allows. A string of interviews that determine the personality, proficiency, and the cognitive abilities of the future employee must be accomplished to ensure the best people are placed in our organization.…

The exercise was designed so that everyone is assigned to an executive position in PB Technologies. Then, everyone has to choose his or her candidate individually before we attend the executives meeting to come up with a single candidate. My position in the organization was the VP of Marketing. Once I received the exercise’s handout, I read it carefully, compared the three candidates’ resumes and then decided to nominate Suzanne T. Valdes for the Senior VP of Finance and CFO position. I based my decision on the fact that she has the most related work experience and personality to the position, EMBA and she is an insider, which I believe is a very important quality for that position.…

    Miranda vs. Arizona

This case had to do with an Ernest Miranda who raped a Patty McGee*. After extracting a written confession from the rapist about the situation, Miranda's lawyer argued that it was not valid since the Phoenix Police Department failed to read Miranda his rights, also in violation of the Sixth Amendment which is the right to counsel. Some factors that helped support Miranda's arguments were that the suspect had requested and been denied an opportunity to consult with a lawyer; the suspect had not been effectively warned about his right to remain silent; and an incriminating statement must have been given by the suspect. The author of the Arizona court's decision, former U.S. Senator and Arizona governor Ernest W. McFarland, said that Miranda had not requested a lawyer at the time of his detention and therefore was not entitled to the protections offered by such thins as in the Escobedo vs. Illinois case.…

The American College Test and Scholastic Assessment Test, commonly known as the ACT and SAT, are both standardized tests used to determine a student's academic knowledge and skills in order to identify which level of colleges and universities they can handle. The ACT Inc. calls their test an indicator of "college and career readiness" and college boards trust their numbers to reflect just that. Although it is known that college admission boards take into consideration many other factors, such as grade point average, extracurricular involvement and class rank when accepting and rejecting applicants, it in inevitable that students are still turned down because their standardized tests reflect that they are not "ready." As a result, high schools all over the nation put great emphasis on these college admissions tests that are administered nationwide to each high school junior. It is true that standardized testing is a method for colleges to rank and then select students by expressing each student's capability as a number. This number is useful because otherwise it would be very difficult to rank such a diverse group of people, each with his or her own strengths and achievements in different fields. Although this solves the problem of having to weigh the significance and precedence of each individual's past…

At college fairs and information sessions, colleges won't need to spend time answering high school’s questions about their ranking and test score "cut-offs." Instead they have conversations about the things that matter. For example, what does your unique academic program look like? What qualities does a student need to be successful at it? Colleges no longer have to worry that any applicant will lower their average SAT/ACT scores and thus lower their U.S. News ranking. Instead colleges choose quality over quantity and focus attention and resources on each applicant and their full portfolio.…
