“Cool Hand Luke” Movie Review What is Cool Hand Luke? Why should I see it? One might ask themselves these questions when they come across this 1967 film. Truth be told, Cool Hand Luke is one of those classic American films that never lose their touch. It tells the story of troublemaker Luke and his first time experience in a chain gang prison, and how he ended up there. This story will definitely keep all types of viewers hooked in. I believe Cool Hand Luke does a great job of playing out the events in a simple manner so you understand what is happening. Right as the movie starts, it shows Luke vandalizing parking meters and is arrested. Shortly after, he is sent off to a chain gang prison where the convicts must endure backbreaking work to set their minds straight. You can tell by the prisoners’ sweat-drenched bodies in the blazing heat that this place is no joke indeed. Luke is a man, who always has to defy authority but once he is inside the prison, he manages to bring a crew of convicts together to create a bond between the men and works his way up the ladder for their respect. He develops a deeper understanding of who they are and how they got where they are. The things that Luke says and the way he interrupts other people’s conversation such as “You got questions, you come to me. I'm Carr, the floor walker. I'm responsible for order in here. Any man don’t keep order spends a night in...Luke: ...the box.” quickly makes me, along with the rest of the prison, realize that Luke isn’t your regular convict. I am able to connect with the prisoners and feel like I am a part of the prison. It gets me rather involved into the story.
