Cool Runnings
Irving "Irv" Blitzer was an American bobsled two time Gold Medalist at the 1968 Winter Olympics who finished first in two events again during the 1972 Winter Olympics but was disqualified from the latter for cheating and retired in disgrace to Jamaica, where he leads an impoverished life as a bookie. Irving is approached by two Jamaican athletes: top 100m runner Derice Bannock, who failed to qualify for the 1988 Summer Olympics when another opponent tripped him at the trials, and Sanka Coffie, a champion push cart racer.
The athletes wish to use Irving's previous experience as a Coach in order to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics as bobsledders. Irving had been good friends with Derice's father, Ben, a former sprinter whom Irving had tried to recruit for the bobsled team years ago, who is presumed to be deceased. Yul Brenner, another runner who was tripped at the qualifier, joins the team as does as Junior Bevil, the runner who tripped Yul and Derice. Eventually Irving is convinced to coach the team.
The four try to find various ways to earn money to get in the Olympics; singing on the street, arm wrestling, and holding a kissing booth, but all fail. Junior, however, sells his car, which gets the team the money that they need.
In Calgary, Irving manages to acquire an old practice sled, as the Jamaicans have never been in an actual bobsled. The Jamaicans are looked down upon by other countries, in particular the East German team whose arrogant leader, Josef, tells them to go home, resulting in a bar fight. The team resolves to view the contest more seriously, continuing to train and improve their technique. They qualify for the finals, but are briefly disqualified. At the primary judge meeting, Irving immediately confronts his former coach from the '72 Olympic Winter Games Kurt Hemphill, now a primary judge of the '88 Olympic Winter Games, for disqualifying the Jamaicans for his mistake. He confesses that he made the biggest mistake in his life by cheating by

The article ‘The Frozen Closet’ by Abigail Jones was a defiant statement made about figure skaters personally pertaining to male figure skaters. Jones stating, “The message is clear: When competing, being gay may not hurt you, but being straight helps”, was enough to grab any reader’s attention that was disconnected before hand. The author, Abigail, talks about how USFS(United States Figure Skating) is still closeted themselves yet Obama sends all homosexual competitors to compete in homophobic Russia. She has gathered enough first-hand encounters such as judges or former competitors with personal narratives of what has happened or safe to say still happening.…

Kyle Smith Gail Cameron Wescott in Birmingham and David Cobb Craig in New York City Photographs by Ann States/SABA SUNDAY SCHOOL HAD JUST LET OUT, and Sarah Collins Cox, then 12, was in the basement with her sister Addie Mae, 14, and Denise McNair, 11, a friend, getting ready to attend a youth service. "I remember Denise asking Addie to tie her belt," Cox, now 46, says in a near whisper, recalling the morning of Sept. 15, 1963. "Addie was tying her sash. Then it happened." A savage explosion of 19 sticks of dynamite stashed under a stairwell ripped through the northeast corner of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. "I couldn't see anymore because my eyes were full of glass - 23 pieces of glass," says Cox. "I didn't know what happened. I just remember calling, 'Addie, Addie.' But there was no answer. I don't remember any pain. I just remember wanting Addie." That afternoon, while Cox's parents comforted her at the hospital, her older sister Junie, 16, who had survived the bombing unscathed, was taken to the University Hospital morgue to help identify a body. "I looked at the face, and I couldn't tell who it was," she says of the crumpled form she viewed. "Then I saw this little brown shoe - you know, like a loafer - and I recognized it right away." Addie Mae Collins was one of four girls killed in the blast. Denise McNair; Carole Robertson, 14; and Cynthia Wesley, 14, also died, and another 22 adults and children were injured. Meant to slow the growing civil rights movement in the South, the racist killings, like the notorious murder of activist Medgar Evers in Mississippi three months earlier, instead fueled protests that helped speed passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. "The bombing was a pivotal turning point," says Chris Hamlin, the current pastor of the Sixteenth Street church, whose modest basement memorial to the girls receives 80,000 visitors annually. Birmingham - so rocked by violence in the years leading…

I read the novel Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez, a non- fiction novel about Rodriguez’s life as a child when he crosses the border of Mexico at the age of two with his family. As Rodriguez took me on a rollercoaster through his life, I experienced many upsetting emotions even to me such as; disgust as he describes the police, fear during gang wars, pride when he makes a difference in his community and sadness when he loses some of the people he loved.…

Another aspect this movie portrays is keeping a positive attitude when facing hardships. Gerry Bertier was paralyzed in an automobile accident while out celebrating a team victory before the championship game was even played. Instead of getting down and giving up like most would want to do in his situation, he keeps a positive attitude and cheers his team on from his hospital bed. Because of his positive attitude, the movie goes on to let viewers know he was able to win a gold medal in the shotput event at the Paralympic…

"The Olympics are not a 'small sacrifice!' For four years we have been working for this, and we have made huge sacrifices for our sport. We have given up college education, secure jobs, and happy families all for these games. Do not dismiss what you are doing to us as a small sacrifice for the greater good. Remember that in doing this, you are taking away our lives. You are destroying us." Anita stopped for a moment and remembered where she was. The courtroom was no place for emotional outbursts. Embarrassed, she sat down. The courtroom became deafeningly silent.…

Everyday people are stuck facing new things, whether it’s asked of them or forced upon. Throughout someone’s early life, he or she is surrounded by the people closest to them: parents, friends, co-workers, that they are taught or influenced by every day. After one makes a decision there is always either a good or a bad outcome. After one makes a choice it is most likely followed by another. Not everybody has control over the reaction after their choices are made. Sometimes you don’t always get to see the outcome of doing something good, or you might not like the reaction you get of making a bad choice. Either way it’s up to the person to make the decision. Let it be good or bad, determine their outcome in the end, and how they handle the situation.…
