Should students wear uniforms to school?
Uniform is an issue that many of our fellow country wide students are facing. Many students don’t want to wear uniform, but others are saying that they are comfortable wearing uniform and that every school should have a type of uniform. There are two sides to this conflict, a pro and the con although there are more pros than cons; the cons usually are a bigger argument.
Uniforms could stop students from expressing themselves. Having a boring everyday style, students might drift off into another mind and think differently and do different things. They might start acting all mad, get into gangs, or it might even lead up to drinking, smoking and even drug use. An article found on the internet supports this statement, (http://aclunv.org/category/issue/education/uniforms). At (¶ 7, line # 9-12) it clearly states, “...the researchers found that student uniforms had no positive statistical correlation with absenteeism, drug use, attitudes toward school, or student achievement. Strikingly, the authors found only one statistically significant correlation – a negative effect on student achievement by tenth graders forced to wear uniforms.” Having a unique style being taken away could affect the minds of students. Students shouldn’t be denied the right to expressing themselves because it’s their unique way to show others who they are.
Have you seen school uniform these days, not only that they have no style, they are so uncomfortable. Many students will complain how these clothes are uncomfortable and not only that, they are very distracting and make it hard to concentrate during classes. Most of them aren’t suited for the seasons like a sweater in summer. Michelle Kouzmine contributes to the two sides on this conflict on her articles, “The Arguments against School Uniforms: Cons to Wearing School Uniforms” and, “The Pros of School Uniforms: Why Students Should Wear School Uniforms the Argument for School Uniforms” In the text, (¶ 3) the author states, “Kids are very specific about what they are comfortable wearing. Some kids are sensitive to certain materials while others are opposed to buttons, zippers and restrictive clothing. Some children are also uncomfortable wearing certain styles of clothing. Many girls, for example, do not like to wear skirts or dresses, which most girls' uniforms require. No uniform can suit all children.” If this keeps on happening to students, their distraction could affect their grade. A piece of clothing doesn’t sound like a good excuse for a lower grade and this is another reason students shouldn’t wear uniform.
If students had to wear uniform, there are two things to do. First, you could stay put and let the uniform get to you, or second, you can stand up and right for your justice. Some kids took this matter seriously because they didn’t want the uniforms to affect them so they make a speech and one of these groups actually went to the Supreme Court. In the article on the internet (¶ 1, line # 4-7) the author says, “…took their free speech case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which famously noted in its Tinker opinion that students “do not shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate.” The Court set out a framework for dealing with students’ free speech rights in school: that students have a First Amendment right to express themselves so long as that expression is not disruptive to the school day.” Students have rights, and schools shouldn’t take those rights away, even if they do, students could stand up and fight for their justice.
In conclusion, students shouldn’t wear uniform to school. A simple solution to this conflict is schools should let students wear whatever they want, but as long as it’s appropriate to wear in school. Just because a student is entering through the school doors doesn’t mean that the school should take away their rights. Everyone should be able to express themselves outside and inside of school.
