It is most adaptive to use various ways of coping strategies (Weiten,2014). maladaptive coping techniques only reduce symptoms while maintaining and strengthening the disorder. Maladaptive techniques are more useful during a short term coping process rather than a long term coping process. When certain events aren't going in a positive way I find alternate sources of satisfaction. Those alternate sources would be excessive eating, drinking, shopping, and sleeping. Finding another area that will make me happier or forget about whatever bad event happened seems to even the good and bad. For instance I had a bad day so I feel as though I need to go shopping for new clothes to make me feel better. This coping strategy would fall into the adaptive category. This would be considered a maladaptive coping technique.
I would also say I use defensive coping mechanisms. A defense mechanism is usually unconscious reactions that protects an individual from miserable emotions. It is basically a distortion of reality. The common defense mechanism that I use would be the intellectual mechanism. Its says that when using this mechanism an individual cut off emotion from hurtful situations or separating conflicting attitudes in logic-tight areas (Weiter, 2014). It is not healthy to choose this way of coping. I use this mechanism to avoid certain things when experiencing a hard time.
