Core Competency

Core Competency involves incorporating diversity into practice. This skill is associated with several practice behaviors that I will be linking to specific artifacts. The first practice behavior is transforming one’s behavior in response to recognition of one’s biases based in difference and culture. This practice behavior relates to an Alcohol Anonymous meeting that I attended, and I had to write a reflection for my substance abuse class. The second practice behavior is modifying and adapting mainstream knowledge and interventions to meet \ needs of diverse populations and that challenge oppression. This consisted of a population at risk paper I wrote for class regarding human trafficking. The third practice behavior is applying strengths
The paper includes information about minors that experienced sexual trafficking. As I wrote and conducted research on the paper, I learned more about the needs of this specific diverse population as well as agencies that assist minors who experienced sex trafficking. I also identified several challenges that minors face once they are trafficked such as exploitation. I have applied the information I learned from writing this paper at my internship when assessing patients that experienced some form of abuse. event that I attended demonstrates how I examined myself one’s role as the life-long learner in the area of diversity and culture. At the event, I was provided with the opportunity to learn more in the field of social work. There were several workshops at the event and I decided to learn more about prisoner re-entry. At this event I learned the challenges that this population face when applying for jobs, housing, and obtaining other resources. I also learned what social workers can do to better assist this population, such as becoming involved in advocacy work. I think this Teach in was enlightening, and helped me examine myself as a life-long learner in social work.
Incorporating diversity into practice is an important component in social work. As a future social worker, I will be in contact with many diverse clients therefore, learning to examine my bias, engage in life-long learning, and applying strength-based approaches are essential. Diversity may encompass many aspects of social work thus, I will continue to grow my skills, and learn to advocate and adapt interventions that are needed in social
