The core values of the American government are liberty, individualism, equality, and self-government (Patterson, 2013, p. 9). The first American fundamental principle is liberty, and that each person should be free to think and respond as they choose too as long as they do not infringe unreasonably on the freedom of others well-being (Patterson, 2013, p. 9). The principle of individualism allows each person to take the initiative to be self-reliant as well as being able to take control of their lives (Patterson, 2013, p. 10). However, all individuals should take on the responsibility for making effective decisions concerning their lives and livelihood.
