Dissecting Research #1 In this study, the researchers accomplished a series of tests that would focus on the injury of a corpus callosum. The corpus callosum is the nerve fibers that hold the right and left hemisphere of the brain together. The first test performed tested the visual abilities. The test “involved a board with a row of horizontal lights”. The patients were then told to stare directly at the center of the lights while the lights randomly would flash “across both the right and left visual fields.” The patients were then told to explain what they saw. While the “left brain controls the ability to use language” and the “right is involved more in spatial relationships, such as those needed for artistic activities,” either brain feeds off generally gives the same response. A visual experiment was conducted to this woman where the experimenter would quickly show a picture of a nude woman to either side of the brain. When it was flashed to the left side, “she laughed and verbally identified the picture of a nude. When it was later presented to the right hemisphere, [...] she saw nothing, [...] and she began to chuckle.” Even though the right hemisphere was unable to visually identify the picture, she was still fed the same feeling she did when she saw the picture through the left hemisphere. This type of research can help further the knowledge about the functions of the brain. It will help researchers understand certain functions so patients with head injuries can be treated the right way. It can also open doors for therapists to come up with tactics to regain lost functions in their patient’s brain in an efficient and quick way.
While there were a few elements in this study that prove a true experiment to be a true experiment, as a whole, it is still not considered a true experiment. It contained a clear independent variable, where the independent variable was the surgery conducted
