Correctional Counselors: A Qualitative Study
The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the experience of Correctional Counselors who are responsible for prenatal substance users, and to explore how they view their role in the care of the mother and child while overcoming their addiction. As previously mentioned, legislators are amending existing laws to discourage women from using drugs during their pregnancy and punishing those who do (Stone, 2015). According to Stone (2015), there is little research on the correctional counselors’ experiences working with prenatal substance abuse (Stone, 2015).
My positionality on this topic may bring about hidden bias to surface as data is collected. During my academic tenure, I have been gaining knowledge on this topic and have obtained
gainful employment in the field of addiction. As a result, my interview may present as bias causing my research to be flawed. One way of overcoming my positionality issues is discussing concerns with my professor or members of the research committee. At this time, they can provide with me with positive feedback on ways to remain objective and review my interview questions to ensure there is no bias questions.
