Correctional Officer
The career I have chosen to pursue after obtaining my diploma is a Correctional Officer.
I have had an interest in this position for a long time and have worked in similar fields like security. With my past experience, moral sense of right and wrong and admiration for this line of work, I believe I’d be a perfect fit and excellent addition to any correction institution.
Correctional Officers have been around for a very long time and were designed to keep major offenders off the street after they have been arrested by the Police. The offenders are put in a holding cell at a Pre Trial Centre awaiting their court date. Correctional Officers are a very important part of the Justice System because it keeps high profile criminals off the street and locked up even before they are proven innocent or guilty. The care, custody, and control of the prisoner is the complete responsibility of the officers on duty. Many officers find the field to be stressful because it holds the highest risk of injury and illness, often resulting from confrontations with inmates. Jail and prison security must be provided 24 hours a day, officers work all hours of the day and night, weekends, and holidays these factors affect their daily lives very heavily but they do it in the name of justice. The daily interactions with inmates are a big responsibility which I do not take lightly. Although an officer is an authority figure they are civil servants and are required to respect the inmates rights and treat them with respect.
The average starting pay for an officer is $39,794 and will usually go up to around $48,000 but as suggested I didn’t choose this career for money. The requirements include: a high school diploma, U.S citizenship, and no previous felony convictions. I have thought about this career for a long time and I am excited to finally be able to pursue it.
