Introduction:
There have been many changes in the way that crime is dealt with by the criminal justice system since the general elections in 1994. Prisons were previously run in a ‘military’ fashion and a need for a shift away from the previous prison management and treatment of prisoners was immediately made apparent. The rights and responsibilities of offenders needed to be reconsidered. In 2009 there were a total of 240 prisons in South Africa. These prisons can facilitate anywhere between 31 and 3 000 prisoners. Many of the cells within these prisons house up to 100 prisoners. (Prisons, 2006)
Changes in the offender behaviour and population include: * Increase in aggressive and sexual crimes * Increase in number of inmates serving long sentences * Increase in number of inmates serving life sentences * Increase in the number of violent children being sentenced * Increase in the prosecution of serious offences (Department of Correctional Services, 2005:105)
The aim of this research project is to analyse the current processes followed in transportation of prisoners from holding cells at the police stations to correctional facilities. The security measures and technology used within these facilities will be analysed and discussed. Recommendations will be made in regards to the effectiveness and efficiency of these processes and strategies.
