It is a $10,000,000 project but is a renewable energy source that will offset electrical use. This project was done by contractor J.K. Scanlan Company, Inc. The project may have cost $10 million, but it is said to save 9,467,000 net kWh per year. Hopefully, by installing this wind turbine, it will save the taxpayers a little money in the future. It is said to be operating by April 2013 (The Department of Correction, NCCI Gardner - Wind Turbine Installation). Not only were 2 wind turbines installed, but the Power Plant was converted from oil to natural gas, windows and plumbing fixtures were replaced and building insulation was improved all across the facility (North Central Correctional Institution – Gardner). Emotional Awareness and Healing is another volunteer run program, this one is designed to promote spiritual and emotional growth. It promotes responsibility among themselves and others as well. The inmates are taught skills to reduce their bad behaviors (North Central Correctional Institution – Gardner). HIV/AIDS Education is a program that ranges from basic education and awareness to HIV/AIDS to support groups for people suffering with it. This program uses vendor and department staff, volunteers and inmates as instructors (North Central Correctional Institution – Gardner). The Introduction to Treatment program is a 4 week, 12 session program. This program helps prepare inmates to use basic information and skills that they will later receive in future programs (North Central Correctional Institution – Gardner). Introduction to Twelve-Step Programming is a vendor instructed 4 weeks, 12 session program like the Introduction to Treatment program. The Twelve Step Program teaches inmates how to access and utilize the twelve step programming in order to enhance their recovery.
