Pernicious anemia is the major form of vitamin B12 deficiency. It is caused by serum antibodies against intrinsic factor which leads to B12 deficiency rather than by B12 deficiency itself. Absorption of vitamin B12 requires intrinsic factor which is secreted by parietal cells. Pernicious anemia is marked by autoimmune attack on gastric mucosa and a loss in parietal cells. Approximately 75% of the affected patients have type I antibody that blocks the binding on vitamin B12 to the intrinsic factor. These antibodies are found in plasma and gastric juice. A large percent expresses Type II antibodies. Type II antibodies prevent the binding of intrinsic factor-Vitamin B12 complex to the ileal cell receptors. About 85% to 90% of patients have Type III antibodies. Type III antibodies recognize the alpha and beta subunits of the gastric proton pump which is found on parietal cells.1…

    Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that affects the 11th chromosome which is a hemoglobin gene. Hemoglobin is a protein located in red blood cells (RBCs) that carries oxygen through the body. This disorder is inherited from two parents with abnormal genes that are heterozygous (Rr). This means that both parents who have the trait may pass on the disorder to their offspring. The phenotype makeup is recessive. Those who inherit a normal copy of the chromosome 11 and a mutated chromosome will carry the trait, though would not show any symptoms. Normal red blood cells are soft and flexible to fit thought small vessels. Sickle cell anemia causes these blood cells to stiffen and curve, almost like a crescent moon. The abnormal cells (erythrocytes) become stuck and block a narrow vessel which disables oxygen to pass through and causes pain and damage to organs. Many organs such as the liver and spleen become damaged due to lack of oxygen. When the spleen becomes damaged, patience will experience many infections. Pain is also caused by the sickle blood cells becoming caught in vessels called crises. Jaundice (yellowness to eyes and skin) can occur in babies due to liver damage. Sickle cell anemia can be diagnosed by a simple blood test, mostly to newborns. The blood test given to those who weren’t tested at birth is called the hemoglobin electrophoresis. It determines if you have the disease or is a carrier of the trait. It can be treated by blood transfusions from a donor with healthy blood cells, or a bone marrow transplant. Some interesting facts are that: normal blood cells can live up to 120 days, but sickle blood cells live up to 10 to 20 days. When the red blood cells are damaged, the body kills the red blood cells off which causes chronic anemia. African Americans are mostly affected with this disease due to inter-marriage. 1 in 12 African Americans have the trait and 1 in 500 actually have the disease. Also, Sickle cell anemia can be traced back to the…

Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that is rare and leads to not enough clotting factor VIII and IX. Factor VIII is known as hemophilia A and IX is known as hemophilia B. The clotting process is screwed up with the lack of factors VIII and IX causing a person to not form blood clots when needed or they cannot stop bleeding when they are injured. When bleeding cannot be stopped the person can bleed into their joints, muscles and soft tissue without the clotting factors. A normal cut or scrape for a normal person is not a problem, for someone with hemophilia this is a big concern. A normal cut or scrape can lead to bleeding in the head, abdomen, kidneys, intestines and major joints and muscle groups can be life threatening.…

The erythrocytes of certain individuals possess the capacity to undergo reversible changes in shape in response to changes in the partial pressure of oxygen. Sickle-Cell disease is an autosomal recessive disease. Specific research caught my attention such as specific ethnic groups that are more commonly affected by this disease such as African-Americans. It is stated that 1 in 12 of African-Americans carry a sickle cell gene and 1 in every 500 are diagnosed with the SCD at birth. On top of that, 25 percent of the population in Africa carries a sickle cell trait. SCD can damage the brain, heart, lung and liver. People can still live a long life, but the pain unbearably re-occurs. In fact, top source sources state they can live up 47 years old (Collins,…

Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disease that means you are born with it and it lasts a lifetime. People with sickle cell anemia inherit two variant or sickle cell genes, one from each parent. In the United States, sickle cell anemia affects about 72,000 people. About 2 million Americans carry the sickle cell trait but about 1 in 12 African Americans have the trait. The signs and symptoms of sickle cell anemia are different in each person. Some people have mild symptoms; others have very severe symptoms and are often hospitalized for treatment. Infection is a major complication of sickle cell anemia but pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children with the disease. Although there is no cure for sickle cell anemia, doctors know a great deal about how to treat it. I know from experience that sickle cell anemia has affected my sister’s life since her early walking phases as a child. We didn’t know what exactly was wrong with her as an infant, a lot of the symptoms of fevers and fatigue occurred but they thought it was normal. The doctor’s decided to run test on her and found out it was sickle cell anemia. Soon she had to get her tonsils removed in order to keep her fevers down. Now it doesn’t show as much because she takes her medicine which makes her complete in everything she does. The most terrifying feeling about sickle cell anemia is how the doctor’s predict and tell you how their life expectancy is reduced. Knowing that every child doesn’t have an equally chance to be born healthy with no diseases or infections is sad. It was hard to believe that a healthy looking child could have a life threatening disease and still look normal but not all do. Nobody deserves any type of illness but it happens from being passed by one or both parents’ genes. While reading this article I learned more information than I knew which was exciting for me. Sickle cell anemia is a shocking…

After taking my health risk assessment of my choice (stomach cancer) I not only learned what it consisted of, but also what I could do to continue the derision of developing the disease. Stomach cancer, is not different than any other kind of cancer types, such as: breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer, skin cancer, colon cancer or even ovarian cancer. Cancer is cancer. With stomach cancer is can be described as a gastric cancer, which is a malignant tumor arising from the lining of the stomach. The description of cancer is not easily described in a sentence. It is a group of diseases that are found in wild growth of cells. Any gathering of abnormal cells is known as a tumor. There are two types: benign or malignant. Benign tumor does not spread beyond their initial location (the site of the cancer spotted). A tumor becomes malignant when the cells spread (or metastasize) to other areas of the body (other than the site it was originally found). Cancer is diagnosed when a tumor is found to be malignant which can spread to other organs and body parts.…

The sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. People with sickle cell have red blood cells that have mostly hemoglobin's, Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped or crescent shaped and have trouble going through small blood vessels. When sickle-shaped cells block small blood vessels, less blood can get to that part of the body. Tissue that does not get a normal blood flow eventually becomes damaged. This is what causes the problems of sickle cell disease.…
