Correlation EssayThe Things They Carried and Full metal Jacket
Correlation Essay

After viewing the war film ‘Full Metal Jacket’ and while reading Tim O’Brien’s ‘The Things They Carried’ I noticed some similarities. The two were similar in various aspects but there were a few that stood out more than others. To start off, was the treatment of the enemy. In TTTC, they called them names and did cruel and grueling acts. In ‘Full Metal Jacket’, soldiers committed cruel and grueling acts as well, and they were heavily dissociated to the enemy. That led to such events as killing just for fun or taunting the already dead corpses. Another comparison would be the use of metaficiton in the two. In the novel the use of metafcition comes through the commentary of the reader and story tellers while in the film its seen through a character doing a documentary on the film.

The book and the film have more juxtapositions. For instance, they both show various types of a solider. Examples would be them showing the solider who doesn’t really want to be there (Kiowa and Ace) but came there other purposes, and a soldier who dissociates himself by creating jokes (Azar and Ace).Another similarity within The Things They Carried and ‘Full Metal Jacket’ would be the portrayal of the war. The way in which is shown is similar. It is as though they want the viewers and readers to get more emotionally to the war. They present background information and insight into the characters’ lives, thoughts and feelings. So by giving more information, the viewers and readers are able to connect more and easily.

In this book the author Tim O' Brien uses many different little stories to sum of the big picture of war. He focuses in on many different characters, stories, and their specific feelings to help the reader get an actual feel of what he felt. Which he states on pg. 171 " I want you to feel what I felt. I want you to know why story-truth is truer than happening-truth". While O' Briens main connection to the title focus's in on what each soldier physically carried, deeper than that is the soldiers own feelings, doubts, and fears.…

Truth and non-truth are several aspects emphasized in Tim O’Brien’s novel The Things They Carried. Throughout the novel, O’Brien “[blurs] the lines between fiction and nonfiction” (Smith), and explores how using fiction to convey the war affects the readers more as they learn about the soldiers. By using juxtaposition and by incorporating fictional parts in the novel, O’Brien shows how truth is less important in war stories than non-truth since non-truth makes the reader look at war stories at a more emotional level than truth.…

Manhood in western societies is pre-programmed, pre-packaged and forced-fed to boys from birth to adulthood. Historically the puriest example of a real man was the military standard. Military manliness dictates that a man must be strong, both physically and mentally, a man must be unfeeling and must be loyal to their fellow commrades. Men must show a certain level of respect for women but never acknowledge them as equal.…

To most people war is a way that we settle disputes with other nations, but they don’t fully understand the intricate details that go along with it. Its not just about the guns, gernades and tanks, it brings out different aspects of soldiers personalities and I think should be more focused on the hardships that individual and groups of soldiers endure. The horrific situations that soldiers undergo can cause different types of actions that they would take because war is contradictory. Soldiers experience unimaginable stress that can make them appear weak or strong. Which is the biggest contradiction that war presents; war makes you strong and war makes you weak. There are numerous examples which can easily be found in the book The things they carried by Tim O’brien. Two stories that demonstrate it best are “the man I killed” and “speaking of courage.” Looking back through history also farther promotes the idea, like when America created the atomic bomb, and started a draft.…

I was given the opportunity to read Tim O’Brien’s novel The Things They Carried and relate it to the movie Platoon. Both the novel and the movie demonstrated how the men behaved and reacted to the gruesome effects of war and even when the war was over how those emotions and memories stayed with them for the rest of their lives. Both the author and director used methods of interpreting a story by fusing universal truths and sorrow together to bring about a better understanding of the characters and the upsetting events that took place.…

Yes I do believe that the military will be excepting of a culture changes. The culture of the military is forever going to be changing. It may not be as great as desegregation, woman’s rights, or as great as the LGBT movement. The world is changing and if you do not change with it you fall behind. I think the military is more open to change now than it was back in war ll. I do believe the military we able to handle the culture changes that it counters in the present and future. Because of what we've learned with in our own country. This will benefit us when learning other cultures around the world. We have never fight a war in our own country. So we should be open to new cultures if we are going to be in other countries. So times I think that the United States thinks it’s the only country in the world and that other people do not matter. Life outside the states if very different and uncommon to us. If we do not know their culture then how are we to understand who they are, what they believe in and why are they are fighting. This will help the goal of the military if the soldiers are well educated in the culture that they are fighting against. In many of the videos we watched in class a number of times the soldiers were talking to the local people. This is where I think educating the soldiers really…
