Introduction: Lincoln Steffens published the “shame of the cities” witch was a book based on the corruption in the 1900’s. By 1900, many cities in the south of America were controlled by political machines. These organizations consisted of full-time politicians whose main goal was to get and keep politicians power and money and also influence that went into it.…
Media bias is a very complicated thing, as it may sway a reader’s thoughts towards one side of the spectrum rather than keeping it fair. Most news sources are usually biased towards a certain side, whether it is liberal or conservative, or democratic or republican. Although most news sources are biased, some are moderate and in the middle. Examples of a news source biased towards the liberal side would be New Yorker or The Colbert Report. Examples of a news source biased towards the conservative side would be Breitbart or the Drudge Report. Examples of a news source that is in the middle of liberal and conservative, moderate, would be Yahoo News…
1. Why was corruption so rampant in American politics during this period? Was it worse than today? If so, why?…
Removing the corruption from within the government was a top priority for Progressive Presidents and activists. Due to the great gap between the upper and lower classes in America, this also led to trust busting during this period, the breakout of outrageously wealthy trust organizations such as General Electric. Many laws were passed during this period to enforce these ideas, such as the Federal Farm act of 1916, the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914, and the Meat Inspection Act. The first similarity between the two periods is the ten year overlap at the end of the 19th century. These were both periods of great advancements in the United States, but otherwise they stood for very different principles. The primary difference between the two period…
* The way young children are being forced to work to the death is ridiculous. Children are young and shouldn’t have to go through with that kind of lifestyle. They should be out in school or playing with friends but instead they are forced to work in terrible conditions for long hours. Why would you let children of all people work in such terrible, unhealthy, unsanitary, and hazardous conditions?…
After the Civil War the domination of the "political machine" over the affairs of government in the urban cities of the north became an undisputed fact of local politics. Their power flowed from creating a form of government that sought to perpetuate the position of its leaders by engaging in a bartering process with voters. The political machine existed during a time of mass migration to our urban centers from both immigrants and those in search of work. It played upon the ethnic composition of the new electorate, and their focus on obtaining basic necessities such as work, housing and food. Likewise, political machines acted as a facilitator toward businesses who chose to support them. If a business provided financial contributions and control…
The three branches of government each serve as a crucial aspect to how the United States runs. The Executive Branch houses the president, vice president, and the many cabinet members. The Legislative Branch is made up of Congress, and the Judiciary Branch is made up of the courts. While all three have very different and important roles, the one that has the most power is the Legislative Branch.…
Political parties are destroying America in my opinion. They shape an alliance to vote an assured way whether the designated official thinks through the bill as correct or incorrect. The need for authority has lead this nation to basically a two party system. Independents and other groups get nominated on odd circumstances, but time and again it takes the backing and money to make it happen. It turns out to be even worse as the public divided these parties, such that liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. Unquestionably this Presidential election is more or less electing who you oppose less.…

United States of America is a great country, just like Venezuela or North Korea. Having a corrupt government does not make a nation ‘bad.’ Having a corrupt government is like a car driving off a cliff, the car will explode into the abyss, and there is nothing you can do about it. Greatly, United States is still not floating in midair, right now it is on the point of the cliff. That’s why many do not consider it ‘that’ corrupt compared to other countries. Something those people are not considering is that all of these nation’s mistakes already include corruption and that a few more of those wrongdoings and who knows if one day it’ll include the violence of Somalia. United States has many more issues than the public is aware of. Many people still…
In America, there is media bias because ratings tend to increase when the attention span is more focused on the issues at hand. For instance, people would much rather documentaries or visuals involving chaos and violence rather than a humanly interview. Therefore, media becomes biased because the chosen headliners and stories are consumed with drama which draws larger audiences. On the other hand, political views as portrayed in the news are more likely to be liberal than conservative. Although there is little evidence to support this claim, the political views in different forms of media are usually liberal dependent on social issues such as feminism, gay rights, and welfare. Depending on the carrier of media, a company such as Fox News or CBS might edit the actual news in order to fit their persona or political views behind the company.…
Media bias on issues and candidates. If the local media is heavily stacked in favor of say the liberal agenda then most of the things that are published or aired will be pro liberal on the issues and candidates. Conversely they will down play anything positive about the conservatives and splash anything negative in big bold headlines or as lead stories. In such a climate the public who depends on the media to help them…
The five agents of socialization heavily influence a person’s political beliefs and views on different issues. Family and friends can influence a person on major political positions and even affect if that person considers themselves liberal, conservative, or moderate. A liberal is open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values. A conservative holds to traditional attitudes and values and is cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion. A moderate holds moderate views in politics and sits between the extremes of liberal and conservative beliefs. Because more Americans see both sides of complex issues and see both parties as overly ideological and wish politicians would compromise more, they identify themselves as moderates than as liberals or conservatives.…
There has been much discussion about how mass media presents and can determine the outcome of presidential elections. The media has been accused of focusing on subjects such as the politician's personal life and their characteristics rather than looking at the political issues of the election. The voter's views can also be altered by political advertisements that do not focus on issues. This can cause the voters to believe that certain issues are important when in reality they are trivial concerns. Elections often become popularity contests because of the polling that is done by newspapers and TV news programs prior to the actual voting. Politicians then can have a difficult time guiding voter's opinions on their concerns.…
The major media has a huge part to do with the way our democracy is shaped because the media is often owned and controlled by them, so they can share and manipulate their viewers…
