Corruption In American Gods
Baron Action, a historian and moralist from England said “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”(Absolute). There has been corruption in governments and people of power all throughout time. John Edward Emmerich Dalberg Acton was the first to do research on studying human nature and history, and he discovered great men are almost always faulty men (Soffer).
In American Gods there is corruption throughout the rank of Gods, everyone wants to gain more power and be worshipped more. In The Da Vinci Code there is corruption in the Catholic church, keeping the secret of the Holy Grail and the bloodline of Jesus. History and literature examples demonstrates the idea that the temptation of power causes a person to lose their humanity and generosity. Corruption has been a part of human life throughout all of time, corruption is when a person misuses their power for personal benefit (“Corruption” 143). The increased power a person has, the more likely they will start to think about their own personal benefit. Doctor Ronald Riggo, a professor of leadership psychology says, “The more people possess power, the more they focus on their own egocentric desires and the less able they are to see others’ perspectives” (Riggo). Modern research proves how humans are likely to fall to the temptations of power and use that power to benefit themselves. The Da Vinci Code shows examples of a corrupt Catholic Church and what some people will do to keep or gain power. In “American Gods” corruption is found in the fight for power and how the war is just each side trying to gain more power for themselves. There is a quote from Abraham Lincoln that states “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him

Throughout history, we have seen how power can change people. Hitler took millions of innocent lives because he wanted power. Tyrants destroyed their own family to gain power. The Mongols destroyed anyone or anything that came in their path from taking their power away. Siblings poisoned each other to become king if their father dies. What's common about our history is that when people have power, their morality had to be broken. That's how they have controlled people and have had enemies fear them. A person can't gain, and hold on to their power while adhering to values and a moral code.…

Questions such as "How corrupt do an individual have to become before considered evil?" need to be answered when revising the statement. Individuals who have done corrupt things still does not label them as evil. One may ask what would be considered evil or what would be acceptable or unacceptable but yet still not categorized as evil? So with picking that statement apart and showing all the flaws it is only best to move on to a different argument and throw this one out. Evil is defined as some type of supernatural force or profound immorality and powers used for evil purposes will have evil results. So that tells you that if power is in the right hands there will be good…

“Power doesn’t corrupt people, people corrupt power.” (William Goddis) I disagree with this statement due to the evidence found in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. The theme of this play is Power. Macbeth was prophesied to by the three witch sister that he would be King. “Hail Macbeth… thane of Glamis!, Hail Macbeth…. thane of Cawdor!, Hail Macbeth…. King hereafter!” (Act.1 Scene 3) The odd aspect about this proficiency is that during this time, is that most kings were chosen by God. Macbeth being “The Chosen One” took it upon himself to do anything in his power to make that happen even o that meant getting his hand a little Dirty.…

This writer does not feel power corrupts. Leaders, as well as group members, should have empowerment. Empowerment makes one fit for a job and make fewer mistakes. Being empowered does not mean that a person will not make mistakes, even at times have to go back on their word. Being empowered means to have enough confidence in oneself to do the job, to do that job fairly, and to the best of that individual’s ability. Being corrupted does not mean making less popular decisions, it simply means keeping the individuals or the group’s best interest at heart. At times, this means making decisions an individual would say he would never…

And in many cases, corruption can destroy one’s morals and ethics. In Macbeth, Banquo’s son is concerned with becoming part of this cycle. He fears that he will want more and more until there is nothing left. He knows that when someone gains power, it is easy for them to prioritize their greed and selfishness over what is truly the right decision. A current example of this is North Korea.…

Corruption is lurking around the corner, waiting for the perfect time to pounce on innocent people. Abuse of power is everywhere, like cockroaches hiding under your couch, once you see one you know they’re everywhere. Watch out, keep your wits about you and don’t trust anybody. Many superior people are taking advantage of their role and in a bad way. Do you really want people we should be able to trust being corrupt behind our backs? The book Trash by Andy Mulligan outlines the problems people face dealing with corruption and abuse of power. It includes various examples of inequality, immoral behaviour and abuse of power. Sadly this wretched behaviour is often found in many countries, and many people face it on a daily basis. Who knew somebody could learn so much from a fictional novel.…

Power corrupts because human nature provokes people to never be satisfied with what they have. My first example of power corrupting is in the book OTH. Han , the narrator tells how Om has power over the students : “ When my conversation with Sokdae was over he put his lunchbox up on the desk. This was the signal for everyone to open their lunchboxes.” (13) This passage shows that Om , the bully is using his power to get lunch from his classmates. Another example of power corrupting occurred when Adolf Hitler , a corrupt leader who , exterminated the jews during the holocaust , abused his power and created fear.{http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/holo.html}.This passage shows that Hitler was becoming the center of Nazi , Germany , Hitler got corrupted by absolute power because his tactics were deceiving like offering false peace with his enemies , only to invade them. My final example of power corrupting , is portrayed in the lyrics of the video to Coldplay’s” Viva La Vida.” The lyrics to the song mean that there was a king who felt like he ruled the world. He was a tyrant who enjoyed ruining peoples lives , and seeing them fear his wrath. (Forum). This passage shows that the king had control and power over his people , but the power got to his head and he did bad things to his people. Because the king was a tyrant to his people , his people overthrew and replaced him with a new king. In conclusion , power can be corrupted in many different ways. One example of corrupted power is OM , and how he had power over his classmates. Another example is Adolf Hitler , and how he killed the Jews. My final example of corrupted power is the song lyrics to“ Viva La Vida” by Coldplay , and how the king was a bad ruler to his people.…

An example of "absolute power" corruption is one of the most famous events in history. Adolf Hitler had power over Germany. Some people say he could have been a great leader. Somehow in the process of being in power of his country, an army and people he became corrupted by his power. Like so many other famous people in history they become consumed in their power and want more and more. Unfortunately they are also brought down by that fault.…

I absolutely agree with Abraham Lincoln’s statement. Power is not a jocular matter, if someone is presented with power it can get to their head and they can become corrupt. These people believe just because they are in charge and have power that they can do anything and go against the rules. Due to too much power, people may think they are more powerful than everyone else and put themselves in front of others. Too much power makes it easy for selfish leaders to pursue their own goals at the expense of the well-being of others. I believe that people who do these things are very pusillanimous because all they care about is themselves and they put their needs before others. Many people would grouse if they had a person blinded by power as a leader of their group or nation.…
