Corruption In Hamlet Essay
Death, drama, and madness became Hamlet’s average day of living in the Shakespearean play Hamlet. Corruption happens every day in Denmark; whether it be revenge or little arguments. The play depicts malicious characters and tragic events of death and shame. King Hamlet is murdered by his brother Claudius, who is now King Claudius, and now Prince Hamlet’s step-father. Although the prince may seem crazy, and a little bit scary, he wasn’t the bad guy. King Claudius, who performs incestuous deeds with Hamlet’s mother, the Queen, caused every event that had happened in the play. Prince Hamlet reveals the theme of corruption in Shakespeare’s play, “Hamlet” through his dramatic reenactment “The Mousetrap”, exposing King Claudius. Hamlet attends almost every dramatic reaction the play holds. From the scene of the ghost to Hamlet’s death, he shows consistency to avenge his father’s death. “Give me some light. Away,” () illustrates Claudius’ guilty conscience being revealed through the torturous event of the play. The way “The Mousetrap” play was set up was to be set up exactly like the late King Hamlet’s …show more content…
As the last scene of the play possesses death after death; the first to lie down was Gertrude, the Queen. Claudius poisons a drink meant for Hamlet but his mother had taken instead, abruptly getting the King’s attention. The King yells for her not to drink but like most women today, she does anyway. In this scene, Claudius doesn’t try very hard to stop the Queen because he doesn’t want everyone to know he was trying the kill Hamlet, or to reveal his guilty conscience. The carelessness of Hamlet’s actions is depicted when he shows no care as Horatio pleads to him that the players will reveal all if they go on. “The players cannot keep counsel; they’ll fail all”(). Hamlet going on with the treacherous play “The Mousetrap” causes the foolish actions of Claudius running from the

Consequently, Hamlets’ tragic flaw leads to his downfall. His lack of action causes him not to kill Claudius when he has the chance, giving him the advantage. It can be seen that Claudius has the advantage to kill Hamlet when he states, “By letters conjuring to that effect/The present death of Hamlet. Do it, England” (4.3.65-6). In “Hamlet in Pieces” by Andy Lavender, Claudius is described as "calm, reasonable, decisive," yet a small play scares. Claudius showed no aspects of the Machiavellian he was originally thought to be after he is shaken up by Hamlet’s little show. Instead, he hastily orders the death of Hamlet. Rather than slaying Hamlet himself, Claudius has others attempt to do so. Perhaps this is so because he needs everyone, including Gertrude, to perceive him as a good king. The murder of her son by her husband's hand would cause unrest in Gertrude. Claudius could not lose one of his key aspects for stealing the throne in the first…

With Claudius’s reaction to his play The Mousetrap, Hamlet believes the ghost was telling the truth, and Claudius is the murderer. Later Hamlet notices Claudius kneeling to pray, draws his sword, approaches the king, and does…nothing. Once again, Hamlet has an opportunity to kill Claudius, but chooses to delay his revenge after thinking about what he is about to do. As Hamlet is thinking, he realizes that Claudius would go to heaven if he was killed while praying, whereas Claudius “took [his] father grossly, full of bread, / With all his crimes broad blown, as flush as May” (III.iii.81-82). Hamlet’s contemplative nature leads him to realize that he wants to send Claudius to hell as well, allowing for the ultimate revenge. Always the philosopher, Hamlet stops to think about what would happen if he killed Claudius at that moment in time, resulting in another delay and no action. Hamlet is given the perfect opportunity for revenge, but chooses to wait for the right moment, proving his indecision and contemplative…

The truth of the death of his father becomes known to Hamlet when his father’s ghost appears to him, explaining that he was murdered with poison at the hand of his own brother, Hamlets uncle. This method of death by poisoning foreshadows the death of the main characters later in the play. Prince Hamlet then devotes himself to avenging his father’s death, but delays the physical death of his uncle in order to torture him psychologically. The people involved enter into a deep melancholy and madness as Hamlet lets go of his closest relationships, judging family and friends for their disrespect toward his dead father. Hamlet psychologically tortures his uncle by arranging for a play named “Mouse Trap.” Hamlet plans it so that it parallels his father’s death, in an effort to witness Claudius’, Hamlet’s uncle’s, reaction. Claudius goes through physiological distress as he begins to wonder if Hamlet knows the truth behind the death of his father. Claudius then runs out of the theatre in order to pray for forgiveness. Hamlet follows and begins to draw his sword as this becomes the ideal moment to enact justice onto his uncle. However, Hamlet takes notice that Claudius killed his father while his father’s sins were unforgiven. King Hamlet had no time to repent due to the fact of his murder and was left to the divine to judge him. Hamlet decided to kill Claudius another time, perhaps when the…

William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, written between 1599 and 1602, is a tragedy that has become an iconic example of madness, paranoia, romance, blood thirst, and the supernatural. Hamlet sees his father’s ghost and discovers that his father, the former King of Denmark, was poisoned by his brother Claudius. As the plot unfolds, Hamlet appears to be crazed as his paranoia and suspicions overcome him. Claudius sends Hamlet away to England to be murdered when he suspects that Hamlet is on to him. Hamlet then escapes and returns back to Denmark where he fights with his now killed lover’s brother Laertes. As Hamlet is dying due to a wound from Laertes’s sword, he forces Claudius to drink poisoned wine. As in all Shakespeare’s tragedies, every main character is deceased by the end of the play.…
