Although Creon created the edict with good intentions for the people of Thebes, his failure to recognize the familial bond that ties Antigone to her brother Polyneices coupled with his newfound power as ruler of Thebes contributes to his tyrannical and delusional behavior which ultimately leads to his downfall. Looking back at “Oedipus The King”, Creon established himself as a rational individual, especially during his confrontation with Oedipus when clearing his name as culprit in a placid manner. However, Creon’s attitude shifts dramatically in “Antigone” after assuming the throne. Analysing Creon’s argument with oracle Tiresias reveals Creon’s transformation into a delusional tyrant. Tiresias offers his wisdom to Creon claiming he is responsible…
The most significant theme in Sophocles’ Antigone is whether or not the law of man conquers divine law. Amidst the play, the newly crowned king Creon proclaims that the body of Polyneices will not receive a proper burial, but instead will be publicly shamed and left to be preyed upon by wild animals. Upset with Creon’s mandate, Antigone mourns the death of both of her brothers, Polyneices and Eteocles, and gives Polyneices a proper burial so he can move on to the afterlife.…
With power, a ruler can control people into not doing what is right. King Creon makes a law where no one can bury Polyneices (his nephew). In the play Antigone by Sophocles King Creon makes a law that says “ Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial” pg. 820. King Creon has a lack of sympathy towards his family members. He doesn't care about Polyneices or about his family members, the law is the law. Creon could have created harmony by letting Polyneices have a burial. King Creon uses his powers to have the upper hand against all people.…
Throughout history, there have been countless kings and rulers that have shaped government systems and history as a whole. The bad kings and rulers are often remembered as tyrants and unfair dictators. It is a fair assumption that throughout the play Antigone, Creon ruled with an “iron fist,” but undoubtedly over-exercised his powers when dealing with his punishment for Antigone for burying Polyneices’ body. He continually insisted that his law was in accordance with what the gods wanted. His stubbornness kept him from listening to Haemon, even though his son tried to persuade Creon from executing Antigone. Sophocles intentionally has Creon lose everything towards the end of the play to show the consequences of confusing his own law with what the gods would want. In his play Antigone, Sophocles shows the danger in being too stubborn and self-reliant a ruler, as well as mixing human law with divine law by presenting a proud, overbearing ruler in Creon.…
Power has a negative effect on others because powerful people are unable to see other perspectives. If people have too much power, they begin to put themselves on a pedestal. For Example, in Antigone, Creon does not understand Antigone’s reason for betraying the law set in place, Creon’s law does not allow Antigone to bury her brother, but that does not stop her. Antigone’s religious values causes her to break the law so her brother can find peace, and go to heaven. Because of Creon's power, he is unable to sympathize with his niece/future daughter-in-law.…
The play Antigone supports Creon’s claims that the rule of the king must be obeyed even if it is wrong in order to avoid anarchy and chaos. It is tragic that so many lives had to be lost. It is hard to be a king and maintain the rule of law. King Creon is a strong king that demands to be obeyed no matter what the cost. Tragically he lost so many that he cared for. First his brother dies, then his two nephews fight over the throne and end up killing each other. Eteocles was the king however his brother Polyneices fought to take his place. To no avail they both die. Eteocles was giving a proper burial for a king where Polyneices was just left to rot on the battlefield.…
From early peoples trying to earn the highest rank of their tribe to the conquests of territories to even the pursuit of the top job in a company today, human beings need to be the cream of the crop. No matter where in the world, there’s always a Julius Caesar or Donald Trump kind of person. In a lot of instances, these types of people end up with a wealth of success, but it always comes with a cost: they expose who they really are, for better or worse. In Antigone, a tragic play by Sophocles that takes place in Greece in around 441 B.C., a man named Creon takes over as king of Thebes after the exile of his brother in-law and former king, Oedipus. He starts to really show his colors when Antigone, Oedipus’ daughter, attempts to bury her dishonored brother, Polynices. Sophocles’ message of power in this instance and throughout the book is simple: sovereignty exposes the whole person. Throughout Antigone, the power of the throne rips off Creon’s false personality and shows that he always has his well-being before…
Power is the ability to influence people to perform in a specific way. The ambition of having power, has made humans influence other peoples’ lives and nature. For example, writer David Hume presented and criticized the “is-ought problem—the notion that we can derive what ought to be from an example of what is” (Barash 283). People are not satisfied with what is natural, so they want to go furthermore and try to change it, using any sources they have within their reach. We are unstoppable, the more we have the more we want.…
Next, Antigone says to Creon, “All those here would confirm this please them if their lips weren’t sealed by fear - being king, which offers all sorts of various benefits, means you can talk and act just as you wish.” and Creon responds with “In all of Thebes, you’re the only one who looks at things that way.” (572-577). This quote shows how arrogant Creon is and how he doesn’t realize what she is saying true but no one would say anything because they are scared of him. This shows how people fear Creon because of the power he has and that he could and would do anything to them if they were to speak up. Also, Creon and his son Haemon start arguing. “You’re the worst there is - you set your judgement up against your father.” “No, not when I see you making a mistake and being unjust.” (845-848). This quote is showing how Creon’s son Haemon sees that what he is doing isn’t right and that his power is driving him to do dumb things. It also shows that the power Creon has from being king is going to his head and He is doing things he shouldn't be doing. As you can see this shows how Creon is being is driven by…
Throughout the history of the world, power has been given to people like monarchs, dictators, military generals, and even presidents. Like most things some handle the power extremely well while others abuse it. The abuse affects the people of the area and history is changed when the person takes their power to an unfathomable level. Power abuse can be dated back to the beginning of what we can recall.…
Violence, greed, and suffering are all great examples of power being abused negatively. When someone has power, they have the decision to either use that power in a positive or negative way. Sadly, some people decide to use their power in a negative way that affects others. Power can have a negative effect on others by using fear and manipulation.…
Creon claims that his rule as king must be obeyed, even if it is wrong, in order to avoid anarchy and chaos, but the play does not side with him. Creon's first rule as king is that no one "shall entomb [Polyneices] or mourn, but leave unwept, unsepulchred, a welcome store for the birds, as they espy him, to feast on at will." He also states that if anyone is to bury him they shall be put to death. When he is told that Antigone has buried her brother Creon is faced with questions of loyalty. He can not go against his law or he will look weak and it will look as though his laws do not apply to his family. He can not kill his niece or he will look evil. Antigone feels what she did and is prepaired to do is just with the Gods, but what Creon did was not his choice to make, that he played the Gods role. As the play unravels Creon's struggle with divine morality versus religious morality is highlighted by how fate plays out. While Antigone is taken away the town of Thebes urges Creon to free her. Creon loses support of his family and his people. Chaos quite literally breaks out in his own backyard. Creon's steady decline suggest not only that his rulings were wrong, but also that they should not have been obeyed. Towards the end of the play Teiresias warns Creon by saying "Then know thou...that thou shalt not live through many more courses of the sun's swift chariot, ere one begotten of thine own loins shall have been given by thee, a corpse for corpses; because thou hast thrust children of the sunlight to the shades, and ruthlessly lodged a living soul in the grave; but keepest in this world one who belongs to the gods infernal". Creon hurries to correct his…
At the very beginning of the play Creon quickly establishes the conflict for the play. He states that “no one shall bury the corpses of the traitorous polyneices”, which starts the conflict between himself and polyneices sister, after time pases during the play antigone desides that she needs to bury her brother polyneices the correct way and she goes on to bury him, when the people find out that he was buried, they think think it was the god’s that did it because there was no trace of anyone doing it. Time passes and antigone is finally accused of the crime and fully accepts the punishments she has received. One of her quotes really stand out to me she said “And if I have to die for this pure crime,/ I am content, for I shall rest beside him;/ His love will answer mine” (lines 72-74). This quote is basically saying that she is not afraid of the so called crime she committed and that she would rather be with her dead brother All of this is proof that all of these catastrophic events where from a individual who had or has too much power in his or her name. This is why if you ever see someone receiving or gaining too much power and becoming somewhat of a dictator, leave the country it is happening in or if you cannot leave try to escape or take a stand against it with many…
In the book Antigone by Sophocles, King Creon uses his power to do harm to the people he rules instead of leading them to help benefit him. King creon hears that antigone has disobeyed his orders about burying polyneices . WIthout sympathy for the situation or caring about his relationship to her he orders for her and her sister, ismene, “to win bitter deaths for this”(827). A good leader should be leading the people out of them honoring him as a king and respecting him, not out of fear to be sentenced to death next.…
In the play Antigone a king that goes by the name Creon abuses his power as king. He abuses his power by making laws that don’t help the society just himself. For making these laws, no one likes him and no one is willing to break theses laws for justice because it will just get them killed. Just as for our tragic hero Antigone died breaking these laws for her brother and for the Gods. Again he abuses his power by killing…
