Cortanooth: A Short Story
In Cortanooth, there is a native fruit that grows every spring. It is called manala and it’s skin is bright green, like a granny smith apple. When you take a knife to it’s thick skin to reveal a dark orange, soft flesh that tastes similar to a mango. This fruit was once very popular in Cortanooth, until a hurricane wiped out the small island, leaving few of the trees it grows on. One day in April 1974, Mystic came across a manala tree that stood isolated from the village he lives in. He took a new route home from school this day and bumped into it. Mystic wore rags and had a staggered walk because his shoes had holes all on the soles. His family was far from wealthy, but they stressed the importance of education in him growing up. He always …show more content…
Only today, he grew curious of the delicious fruit that grew from the tree and decided to try it. Food at his cousin's’ house was rationed out in a way that everyone could only have one meal a day. Mystic always carried his father’s pocket knife, who was tomato picker, as a weapon he once used on an angry cat. After snacking on the manala, he head home to his cot. While laying down, Mystic began to feel confident in himself, a feeling has not felt in a long time. The following day at school, his teacher kept him after class to discuss a college interested in offering him a scholarship. A free ride at that! Mystic was thrilled and returned home boasting to his family, who were shocked since nobody in his village has even stepped foot in a college. Everyday for the next week he continued to walk the same path home, eating manala fruit each time. Soon after, students began walking home with Mystic, stopping to eat manala. Mystic began to notice by the end of spring that there was no more fruit on the tree. He was not worried, for everyone in the village got to have some of the fruit. Years later, Mystic graduated from medical school and got a job at a hospital near his village. He walked to the manala tree and saw only its massive trunk, meaning he had to look high up to witness the top; which was filled with manala fruit on every branch. There were a few ripe ones that had landed at his feet, indicating the

The author sits underneath the “branches of a yellowish sycamore.” He exhibits that just as Eve approaches the tree to decide to sin and partake of the fruit, Gary Soto lets the aspiration of wonder affect his actions as he cowardly approaches the tree to partake in his pie. He associates his immorality with stories from the Bible. Soto reveals this by using allusion. The author is worried that “Eve got in deep trouble with snakes, and yet “that didn’t stop me from clawing a chunk from the pie tin and pushing it into the cavern of my mouth.” Adam and Eve did not want the apple for its taste. They were drawn to the fact that it was forbidden. Gary Soto is also mesmerized at the immorality of the prohibited and comes to the conclusion “that the best things in life came…

Constructing this story first with the campfire is the cliché atmosphere for the bonding of man and his offspring. Significantly, the selective detail of the pine falling from the tree foreshadows the similar genealogical-biological proverb, “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree”. Building on this mutuality, the audience can infer the strain that will soon occur between the father and the son. Nature alludes to the genealogy between man and father. When the narrator expresses, “when you slept inside the tent it seemed always that it was raining outside because the needles from the pine kept falling…,” one can conclude the agony that will soon come from the one who inflicts this pain. Conclusively, the imagery reflects a correlation, but a sense of authority and…

Thoth was best-known and worshipped in Hermopolis, though this city had a cosmogony of its own (David 88). In this cosmogony, Thoth was considered to be a minor creation god as he was the leader of a group of eight gods, called the Ogdoad (Budge 113; David 88). A bronze statue from the Late Period of Thoth with the smaller eight around him has been made as evidence of worship and acknowledgment of this myth even until later times (Silverman 35). This group originated from Khmun, one of the locations of Thoth’s cult centers (Wilkinson 78). The Ogdoad consisted of four male-female pairs: Nun and Naunet, Heh and Hauhet, Kek and Kauket, and Amun and Amaunet (David 88; Wilkinson 78). Each pair stood for a different aspect of primordial creative…

Upon first sight, a cherry doesn’t seem special. It is just a small piece of fruit, hardly even worth noticing. It is not dripping with juice at all, and it doesn’t seem to have the potential to do so. You would probably even pass over it on first glance, thinking that it is nothing special. At a second glance, however, something about it appears more desirable. The skin is pleasantly tight on the surface, promising something to die for underneath, puckering into a round little “O” at the stem. It is cold and hard, but silky at the same time. The color ranges from brightest blood red to deepest dark maroon depending on where you look and what angle you choose to see it from. The light glances off the skin, leaving the fruit with a delicate, glowing shine making my skin on my palm seem lifeless. It is almost like seeing a miniature version of the apple in the Garden of Eden; no wonder Eve was so attracted to eating it.…

In Pocahontas the English Colonists and Native Americans are discovering one another. The movie explores the cultures through the new and, sometimes skewered, perception of the other culture. The love story between John Smith and Pocahontas presents an understanding relationship between the races. They are the first two characters to overcome their fear of the unknown and form a relationship; however most of this is built on a magical ability to understand each others languages. The love between Smith and Pocahontas allows for both characters to learn the others cultures. Pocahontas listens to Smith talk about civilization, houses and England when he tries to assert his culture. However, after his eager attempt Pocahontas points out the fundamentals of her culture as well. Smith learns about the respect for nature the Native Americans have and their importance of connection to spirits and the earth. An example is the Grandmother Willow tree, a symbol of the spirit world.…
