Cortes Letter To Mctezma
In the letter from Cortes to the king, Cortes recounted his army’s experiences, his arrival and encounter with Moctezuma. Cortes’ description of his encounter with Moctezuma explained his decisions in such a way as to justify his actions as rebel. The way he describes Moctezuma submission to him appears to be “novelera” construction of romance as J. H. Elliot described “Cortes retails two speeches by Moctezuma, both improbable in content and tenor as to suggest that they were founded more n fantasy than facts” (pg.106) and with this leading to the misconception of modern interpretation of Aztecs believing of Cortes as God Quetzalcoatl who would come back the east and reclaim his own. Bernal Diaz described the first sight of Tenochtitlan as

Hernan Cortes landed on the east coast of the Aztec empire where the natives mistaken for Quetzalcoatl. Cortes ran with it and told his men to shine their armor so they will reflect the sun making them to appear to have a Heavenly glow. This worked well even convincing the leader of the Aztec empire -Montezuma II- that Cortez and his men were deities. On Cortez's way to the capitol, Tenochtitlan Cortes gained allies among the natives under Aztec control. Montezuma II made the mistake of sending big loads of gold and silver to Cortez as tribute, still under the belief that he was a deity only encouraging Cortez for there to conquer for more treasure. Hernán Cortés was a military leader who seek to gain control on the land and in no doubt was looking for gold from the start. Cortés was becoming selfish by wanting more of the Aztecs gifts and in effect he took control. I find that Cortés was becoming selfish because despite the many gifts that Moctezuma and the natives gave him, he wanted more and didn’t care about the natives. Throughout the story “from The Second Letter”, Cortés is in awe by all the goods they have in the market which he states “every kind of of merchandise such as may be met with in every land is for sale there” (pg. 553). He writes a long paragraph on just about what the natives have which can suggest that he’s more eager to take their land.…

It’s almost comical how the factors of fortune would so boldly control the life of Montezuma Xocoyotzin. It would begin with his birth in the year 1467, which also coincided with the Aztec year ce acatl, or Quetzalcoatl, the Morning Star.1 The priests claimed on the day of his birth that he would be a future ruler and a high priest of infinite wisdom. 2 By 1502, Montezuma had fulfilled this prophecy as the leader of the Aztec empire, reclaiming the wealth and prosperity of his Toltec ancestors through the strength of the Aztec peoples, culture, and religion. It is strange to imagine that even Cortés recognized himself that with one order to his army Montezuma could “obliterate all memory of [Cortez and his men].”3 Yet, as history happened, Montezuma would fall from power at the hands of Cortez, and at what would seem to be due to a choice influenced by factors of his own fate. Montezuma’s military experience, public image, and zealous religious indoctrination would be the factors founded the single decision to allow Cortez into Tenochtitlan, which would result in his own demise.…
