The Seven Steps of Evidence-Based Practice Summary In the article “The Seven Steps of Evidence-Based Practice”, Bernadette M. Melnyk, distinguished foundation professor of nursing at the University of Arizona outlines the argument that despite of proven positive outcomes such as “improved patient outcome, reduced cost, and greater nurse satisfaction” of implementing the evidence-based practice, majority of nurses still remain reluctant in using EBP or use it in the irregular manner. The author suggests to implement the seven step EBP approach using the “PICOT” method. As the author claims that because of financial deficits, not all hospital able to adopt EBP; even if patients have achieved positive outcomes because of implementation of the EBP, majority of nurses refuse to share their experiences with other colleges; even if EBP brought positive outcomes during trials, there is no prove that it may be actual for clinical practice. In conclusion, the author suggests to create sort of feedback team to report EBP results to other health care organizations through local meetings, press conferences, or professional publications.…
The evidence-based practice is a clinical activity which is based on the belief that decision about the delivery of care to clients should be informed by the best available and current scientific evidence (Beanland et al 2011). So as a nurse it is important to understand why evidence based practice is essential when caring for a patient and to be able to apply the best possible evidence to each individual situation.…
Nurses should use evidence-based practice (EBP) guidelines because the evidence retrieved in them is the most current, best evidence. EBP guidelines include clinician expertise, patient preferences, and desirable patient outcomes.“EBP closes the gap between research and practice, providing more reliable and predictable care than that based on tradition, opinion, and trial and error” (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, & Bucher, 2014, p 13). EBP guidelines are central to patient’s plan of care. These guidelines are validated by many evidence-based scientific studies such as evidence findings, data from quality improvement projects, and professional organization standards. They recommend the most appropriate clinical choices, treatments, and care for…
The 1985 film witness, directed by Peter Weir is a crime/drama that develops the theme of conflict on a social, cultural and personal level. These areas of conflict are highlighted through the use of film techniques such as; camera shots, camera angles, lighting and costume. The film outlines the contrast between mainstream American society and the Amish community in regional Pennsylvania. While American society is seen as a violent and arrogant group of people, whereas the Amish are seen to be a peaceful, religious group of people. In this film the Amish perceive the mainstream American society to be called the ‘English’. The reason for this is the Amish originated in England so they believe that anyone else outside their culture is called the ‘English’, who if come into contact with Amish culture, will bring fear, violence and terror.…
A number of studies reveal that the advantages of implementing evidence-based practice by nurses and other health professional’s results in the advancement quality of care that leads to enhanced patient outcomes. Furthermore, the current use of evidence-based in the clinical setting would result in increased patient outcome since the evidence-based practice includes multidisciplinary recommendations that could facilitate all nurses in addressing questions related to the best patient care.…
The health care organizations should provide nurses mandatory evidence-based practice (EBP) programs annually to develop and ensure competencies that enable staff nurses to use evidence in their practice. Moreover, nurse managers and leaders need to create a supportive environment for EBP, such as providing resources for searching for evidence. In order to have the administrative support, managers and leaders need to communicate with policymakers and set out related policies with evidence-based research to make the EBP as the daily basis of nursing care. Consequently, it should be…
Evidence based practice helps us to ensure that we are providing the best possible care to our patients. By basing our care on practices that have outcomes based on evidence just makes since. They have been tested and proven to be effective on patients. We don’t have to do trial and error to find out what works the best for our patients, the work has been done for us. This gives our patients the best care possible. Many changes have been made over the past 10 years based on evidence based practices. There are many resources available to nurses, nurse managers, administrators and others that provide research that has been completed. These resources include different kinds of studies that have been performed. They include cohort studies, case…
Evidence-based practice is an anticipated core experience of all health care clinicians irrespective of position. Role modeling and participating in the skills are necessary to develop evidence-based practice into clinical and nonclinical courses and also an important part in developing positive attitudes toward evidence-based practice, that’s the first step for using evidence to guide practice decisions (Winters). One way to accelerate EBP In health care organizations are by obtaining support from entire culture. Advance practice and staff nurses as well as administrators must have the knowledge and have to believe about the importance of EBP and provide critical skills to support evidence-based care. The knowledge of nursing is built on a…
Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been emphasized since the publication of the Institute of Medicine’s report “To Err Is Human”. Nurses should be able to not only provide standard care within the scope of practice but also deliver safe care based on the best EBP that is most up-to-date at that time. Furthermore, research is developed based on the current evidence-based practice. Research nurses work on new projects to conceptualize innovative ideas, generate literature research, and conduct clinical trials to develop new evidence-based practice. The reason why evidence-based practice and research are important is because health…
Nurses are expected to establish and make use of the best research evidence to enhance the clinical effectiveness of patient care and improve patients’ health outcomes. Barriers exists to knowledge of research utilization in their practice settings. In their study, Dalheim, Harthug, Nilsen and Nortvedt (2012), reported that inadequate time and resources to find research, unsupportive physicians, inaccessibility to information, and lack of authority to implement the finding, were the key barriers for nurses to use evidence based practice EBP (Dalheim et al, 2012). The barriers and assumption that evidence based research (EBR) is cumbersome make nurses to opt use of the gained knowledge from their experience in their practice instead of the advocated…
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an interdisciplinary approach to clinical practice that has been gaining ground following its formal introduction in 1992. It started in medicine as evidence-based medicine (EBM) and spread to other fields such as dentistry, nursing, psychology, education, library and information science and other fields. Its basic principles are that all practical decisions made should 1) be based on research studies and 2) that these research studies are selected and interpreted according to some specific norms characteristic for EBP. Typically such norms disregard theoretical and qualitative studies and consider quantitative studies according to a narrow set of criteria of what counts as evidence. If such a narrow set of…
Nowadays for all health care professional including nurses Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is an expected core competency irrespective of discipline. EBP is necessary to integrate the best research with clinical expertise and patient value to establish best health outcomes (Winters & Echeverri, 2012). This essay will describe concise outline of Evidence based practice. Further it will discuss necessity of EBP into nursing practice and how EBP will helpful to improve the quality of care. The possible role of EBP in nursing will be explored. In addition it will identify some barriers of EBP which a nurse has to take in consideration during practice which need to be explored. However, there is still need to further research and evaluation of new…
According to Masters (2017, p. 255), “evidence-based practice (EBP) is a mechanism that allows nurses to provide safe, high-quality patient care based on evidence grounded in research and professional expertise rather than tradition, myths, hunches, advice from peers, outdated textbooks, or even what the nurse learned in school 5, 10, 15 years ago”. EBP allows nurses to apply current evidence using advanced technology and expert knowledge appropriately. It also allows nurses to practice safely and efficiently while making sound decisions based on relevant research. I believe as a nurse EBP gives me a sense of confidence that allows me improve the quality of care delivered by utilizing my advanced education and knowledge of the nursing…
I am writing in regards to the controversary that typically surrounds our area on vaccinations. I would like to express why I feel it is important to be vaccinated. When properly vaccinated, vaccines can prevent death from diseases and illnesses, it saves you time and money, and it protects those around you whom you care about.…
Nurses are responsible in providing holistic, quality care to their clients. In order to effectively provide such care Boswell and Cannon (2009, p. 2 & 7) states that nurses must base their provision of care on the most current, up-to-date health information available and sound nursing knowledge. This is where evidence-based practice (EBP) comes in. Polit and Beck (2010, p. 4) defined EBP as "the use of the best clinical evidence in making patient care desicions". This usually comes from research conducted by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Thus it is pertinent that research reports are critically analyzed.…
