What I learned from Counseling by the Book, biblical counseling is ministering scripture to those struggling in life or who desire wisdom or God’s directions. Biblical counselors should follow scripture and speak the truth in love to those who need correction, instruction, admonition, encouragement and hope through God’s Word. The goal is to glorify God by assisting people to establish and/or deepen their relationship with Christ.

One purpose of this book is to move counseling away from dependence upon the secular world psychology and toward God’s Word when ministering to struggling people. Truth can never be found through man’s own efforts, such as books, observations and personal experiences.
In the 1970’s Jay Adams is credited with rediscovering biblical counseling. In his book, Competent to Counsel, Adams utilized the term “nouthetic” translated “admonish” from the Greek New Testament. As we seek to minister to people Adam’s view was that scripture is indeed sufficient to provide the tools we need both in terms of ideas and methods.
I have also learned, that Scripture is sufficient for counseling task and superior to anything the world has to offer as scripture states, “Set your affection on things above not on things on the earth.” (King James Version, Col. 3:2)

The Holy Spirit is the One who reveals or illuminates truth. The Holy Spirit is the one who teaches. The Holy Spirit is the one who calls things to remembrance “but the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (King James Version, John 14:26).
The counselor might have to explain the gospel of Jesus Christ that God is in control of all things, He is sovereignty. God can be trusted because he has absolute power and authority over everything.

A strong counseling ministry will bring in many opportunities for a church to provide mercy to those hurting and in need. The church of the living God must be ready and equipped to be a people who deeply care about others. “A new commandment I give to unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
