Counseling Session Analysis
Going into my third recorded counseling session I felt extremely confident in myself, because I have developed a good rapport with my client. I have been having short meetings with my client prior to the recording, and knew something was going on internally. Some of her teachers reported to me that she wasn’t taking her medication, and her grandparent just recently passed away. Entering the session I prepared myself for dealing with her grief, and wanted to address the goals we set the previous session. My client suffers from asthma, and had just been released from the hospital the day before, and was still feeling extremely week during our session.

During the session, I felt I was an active listener and really let the client lead the conversation. This session I really tried to make opening a session and informed consent my own. I opened up the session with explaining the Lamar program, client expectations, and confidentiality. I also used some of my client’s word “messy” when discussing confidentiality, which I felt she was amused by and I think using my client’s vocabulary really allowed her to comprehend her rights and the protocols of the session. Last recorded session my client was all over the place with the issues she was dealing with, but this session I felt I did a better job getting my client to discuss 1-2 specific issues she was dealing with. For example, my client is still dealing with issues with peers at school, and stated she wanted to discuss that situation, but I sensed there was something else she wanted to talk about, and used probing questions to find out her father was recently arrested. Upon discovering this I used reflecting of feeling, with my client and uncovered she felt overwhelmed and

The thing I found most interesting was the clinician’s ability to keep the client on task and always bring him back when he lost focus. The other was how many different activities the clinician had planned for the fifty-minute session. She kept the client very busy as to not lose his focus, yet still managing to keep everything tied into the goals she had laid…

When I got to my office after a long day, I checked my voice message. I had a message from a new client, who wanted to schedule a time. She introduced herself as Mrs. Shayan in the message, and from her accent I could tell she was from Middle East. Thus, she didn’t mention what type of therapy she was looking for. When I called her back, she paused for a second and asked me to hold on the line for a minute. Then she apologized, and explained that she didn’t want to talk in front of her daughter. She reported that she was concerned about her daughter, Sheila. She was 9-years-old. She has experienced lots of issues with her peers since several months ago. Mrs. Shayan asked me if she needs to bring Sheila for the initial…

The way the counsellor approaches the client in this infant stage is vital for the client to gain trust and has the willingness to open up in later sessions. Some clients may just rush into what is troubling them or say nothing, in both cases the counsellor will need to be patient, observe and listen to what is being said as there will be vital information given and without understanding this it could damage your relationship.…

At the beginning, an introduction and greeting is pivotal in putting the client at ease. An abrupt or insincere welcome might prevent or hinder the establishment of the relationship. The beginning should convey acceptance, valuing the client, a willingness to understand without judgement, openness and honesty, and a hope that “we shall be able to work together for as long as you feel it to be helpful and worthwhile" (Mearns and Thorne, 1999, p.126).…

At the beginning of the session I introduced myself by first name to the client before outlining the counselling contract with her. I felt it was important for the client to know that I am a student member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy because it provides a framework of good practice when working with clients. Agreeing the contract allowed for client autonomy too. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy suggests that autonomy is respect for the client's rights to be self-governing. (2011, p.2 ) I mentioned I would be working with her in a Person-Centred way which meant that the client would not be led by me, we would be working in her way and that it was her space to talk about what was causing her concerns, and in her own time.…

To successfully help develop a rapport with the client a counselor must show trust, openness and the ability to actively listen. Counselors need to be able to feel the crisis experience as the client feels it. They stay calm and concerned while empathizing about the situation. The counselor gives eye contact, sits in an open stance, asks open questions, paraphrases the client’s words, and constantly engages with the client in an attentive manner. This gives the confidence to the client that the counselor is there to help him/her through the crisis. (Kanel, 2015, pp. 50-51)…

In the first practicum session, I have the chance to role play the client. I tried to fill my emotions as if I am the client who needs to be counseled. The moment I step into the building, I felt a moment of coldness and anxiousness, probably I don’t know what to expect. After I have seated, with the counselor facing me, a total stranger looking at me wanting to talk to me to find out my inner feelings. I was not prepared to share my…
