I think it is important that the student feel my compassion for their problems and that they can feel that I really care about them. I may not be able to relate to everything the students share with me but I am be able to have compassion for how it feels to be in their …show more content…
I can put myself in the shoes of the student and understand the situation from their point of view even though if I don’t completely agree with their perspective, but I have the ability to understand how it feels to them in order to address their issue effectively. I am a very discrete person, so I think it is important to be discrete as a school counselor. I can be able to maintain the confidentiality so the student can trust me with their concerns, problems, questions.
The one of several weaknesses of mine are not able to be authoritative which may present the potential challenge in my journey to becoming a professional counselor. For example, I am not completely comfortable when I have to cross the boundary from “friend” to professional when there is abuse or neglect is suspected or present or if the student is engaging in risky or harmful behavior. I may not be able to know when to show my authority and take the proper steps to ensure the student’s safety.
Another weakness of mine, I admit, I am not very patient. Though it is an important trait for a school counselor interacting with kids all the time, but I cannot really interact with kids very well if I lose patient. I may have a difficulty trying to get the kids trust me and accept certain things which is problematic for me as a school
