King of Victory Alexander Dumas, was born and raised in France when he wrote the book The Count of Monte Cristo. He compares and contrast, the events in his story using chess pieces. For example, a pony resembles a knight, a whistle is similar to a bishop, a count is turik, and a king has all the power. The movie suggest life is about strategy, may the best man win. The introduction of the movie shows Edmond and with his best friend, Fernand , returning from the sea. Edmonds fiancée, Mercedes, utters to Fernand, "Remember when we were younger Edmond received a whistle and you received a pony" (Dumas). This resembles symbolizing how the two guys ranked each other. Edmond got the girl, Mercedes, while Fernand wanted her to himself but ended being alone. Alexander Dumas uses symbolism with chess pieces to represent victory, life, status, and revenge. Intelligence one of the key themes for the movie... Edmond Dantes an innocent young man that was wrongfully imprisoned for treason. Napoleon stopped Edmond to ask Edmond to deliver a note to a dear friend. While, talking with Napoleon he said, "We are all kings and pawns and emperors and fools" (Dumas). Napoleon was referring to how Edmond cannot read or write making him a fool. This is just like Kings rule the land , while pawns defend and retreat. Kings are well educated while pawns are poorly educated and sometimes cannot read or write.
While, in prison Edmond planned out how he would get revenge on all the people who had betrayed him, including his "best friend" Fernand. Fernand deceived Edmond wanting Mercedes all to himself. Edmond is set-up by Fernand to a wrongful sentence to Chateau Dive. Before, he was taken by Char darns, Fernand said, "To remember better days" (Dumas). He handed Edmond a King, chess piece.
