Abstract
The Dominican Republic is known as a beautiful vacation spot, but it is much more than that. There are social and political issues being dealt with everyday while the country tries to grow its economy and protect its citizens. The Dominican Republic is a thriving place of complexities and beauty with a future in the making.
The Dominican Republic reached independence from Spain by 1821 and from Haiti in the year 1844. The country is widely known as an importer of sugar, coffee, and tobacco. Today that agricultural aspect is falling into second place while their service workers such as telecommunications and tourism. They are making a mark on the Dominican economy for the better. As stated on the world fact book website “The economy is highly dependent upon the US, the destination for more than half of exports.” Based on this statement we can see that during the past 30 years the country is still making efforts to build on their globalization and become more industrialized while growing their tourism sector. In the years leading to this, the Dominican Republic had to deal with some very big challenges. According to Hill (2010), a society is “a group of people who share a common set of values and norms.” Significantly, the country has had problems with the level of drug traffickers coming through its boarders; they have been dealing with the corruption of their politicians and law enforcement, as well as having some of the strictest constitutional bans on abortion and gay marriage in the world.
