Courage and Various Means
What is courage? It is an adult who experienced life’s tragedy as a kid or a kid trying to survive alone without his father. It can be a father who goes against the flow of society to fight for what is right or the “dead poet’s society” trying to suck out the marrows of life. There are various means to show courage, but not everyone has the capability to demonstrate it. The characters in the selection had the ability to know right from wrong and stand up for what they believe in even in the face of great adversity.
As innocence fades, it requires courage for a child to accept reality. Lane Patrick’s poem, Because I never Learned showed how his childhood was ruined by the tragedy existing in his abode. “the country I lived in was hard with dead animals and men”. He was aware of what’s going on in their place, and has to be brave in order to accept the idea of war and death. Such experience has molded him into a tough child. As a kid, it would have felt horrible to kill a kitten, but he was brave enough to do it. He had set his mind to let go of the fears for he was expected to act like an adult. “I didn’t question my father when he told me to step on the kitten’s head”().
Running away from home is a cowardly act, but to confront cowardliness is a product of courage. Simba decided to abandon the Pride Lands due to shame and repentance by the belief that he was responsible for his father’s death. In the beginning, Simba can be seen as a reckless and brave kid. He trespassed the hyena’s territories just to explore the elephant graveyard. His courage was supported by the idea that they owned the kingdom and his father was there to protect him. Thus, the death of his father also meant the loss of his source of courage. He was forced to find his own refuge, in the hands of a meerkat and warthog. There, he was able to exercise his own courage, adjusting to a new environment and trying to live despite the tragedy he faced as a kid. However, the fear of the past did not

Nelson Mandela once said "Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future." This quality of compassion is embodied by many characters throughout American literature. Mr. P in Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian displays compassion by guiding the way to a successful life for others. Penelope in Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian shows compassion by being there to comfort her friends during their time of need. Inman from Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain embodies compassion by always stopping to help people in need and preventing future disasters to come. These three characters show themselves to be whole hearted human beings by putting other people before themselves with deep compassion. Mr. P from the short novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian shows compassion by guiding a successful life for others. A way Mr. P shows compassion is when he tells Arnold he needs to escape the reservation, make something of himself, and keep his hope up. He says if Arnold continues to stay on the reservation he will not make anything of himself and will not have an opportunity to attend college. He explains he's a bright young student with a bright future but staying on the reservation will get him nowhere. Another example of Mr. P showing compassion is when he forgives Arnold for throwing the book at him and breaking his nose. He could have held a grudge and punished him but instead he gave him advice that would eventually turn out to be Arnold's best decision of his life.…

In the darkest of times, heroes or cowards are not made, but are revealed to the eyes of humanity. Heroes do not do unrealistic things, but do realistic things under unrealistic circumstances. Men and women put their lives on the line just so you can be safe. Those men and women do it every day of our lives, whether it is firefighters, police officers, or even soldiers overseas. No one can pay them back for what they do, and yet, they still go out and give up their lives so that someone else can have their own. This is how one can describe Engine 10 from the Ladder 10 in the New York Fire Department, a group of the first to arrive at the scene during 9/11.…
