I bet you would be more intelligent when you start to read “Courage for Beginners,” by Karen Harrington. This book only has 289 pages so that you can get a short read. Since it is in first person point of view you get all the details, and feelings of the main character, Mysti. It can really apply to your life as it is in realistic fiction. Don’t just get caught up in the joyful cover of the book because it has a deep, and meaningful soul inside. Do you usually have conflicts in your daily life? Mysti sure does, with her mom never leaving the house, her dad being in the hospital, and her friend, Anibel, might be betraying her.
Mysti goes through everyday problems like how she can’t go anywhere, since her mom never wanting to leave. Truly, mysti is affected through her imagination, it cause more chaos in her mind, especially since her best friend hasn’t been there for her. “Pretend you don’t know me” (23) All she wanted to do was help anibel with an experiment, who could get the most popular girl in the school to become friends with them, but will anibel just betray her? Since she doesn’t fit in with everyone else, mysti just wants to imagine herself in paris, where there is no care in the world, and her little sister, mom, and dad are with her. Although mysti says she is fine, is she really? When will her seventh grade be over, when will dad come home, and will everything be ok? Now why should you read this book? This book gives a good inside on mysties struggles of school. I would rate this book four stars, it had good intake and was a quick easy read. I would recommend this book to girls in fifth, sixth, and seventh grade. Courage for beginners will pull the attention of that age group, and it will most likely relate to their life. Everyone goes through middle school struggles, for instance mystie has trouble making friends at first. You have to ask yourself if she will make friends, and will you make new friends along your journey as well?
