Course-Choice Guidance Program for High School Graduating Students by Saidamen Mambayao
Education plays a vital role on the personal and professional effectiveness of the people. Thus people empowerment should start in the academe. I confidently believe that through this course-choice guidance program, the graduating high school students will be well informed on what course to choose, thus, bringing out the best in them and educating them on how they can be effective and competitive as future leaders of the society.
The Problem: Wrong Choice of College Course!
Most of the time, the graduating high school students find it hard to select the course that is really fitted for their individual talents, strengths and intelligences. In addition, some don’t have the freedom to choose their courses because these have been predetermined already by their immediate set of influences. They also tend to choose a course based on popular choice. They follow what the trend is and forget what suits and what really brings out the best in them.
Thus, in the end, these students find themselves working in the fields other than what they have been trained for in school. Did they and their immediate set of influence just waste their resources, i.e. their time, effort and money, in pursuing the course that didn’t fit them? Who’s to blame? Or are they supposed to blame somebody if they, the parents and the students, have been blinded on the fact that during these ever changing times, some of the old beliefs and perspectives of people regarding what field to pursue are not applicable anymore?
The Solution: Course Choice Guidance Program!
This program aims to conduct a whole day seminar-workshop to the graduating high school students, together with their parents, all over national capital region and its neighboring towns/cities (and all over the Philippines if possible) during the second semester of school year 2011-2012.
The Following are the Objectives of the Program:
1. To provide the Graduating High School Students with Success Guidelines
2. To help them find their Strength Zones which they can use as a starting point as they prepare for tertiary level
3. To teach them the Idea of Effectiveness which they can use in their everyday lives, their studies, and their negotiation and relationships with other people
4. To teach them how to develop Good Habits that can help them in achieving their self-set goals
5. To create Awareness on both parents and students about the Four Types of Income Generation Activities where people fall
6. To Offer Scholarships available from partner companies and government agencies.
For the high school students, who are looking forward to finding the best course to study in college, it is necessary that they get to forecast earlier the possibility of working in the real arena. What does this mean? This tells us that their choice of course in college has to be wise. This calls for them to enroll in a course that could stand still despite rapid global changes. After all, they want to survive in the game using the degree that they will earn.

All children are required to graduate high school, but pursuing higher education is only recommended. While high school curriculum is designed to prepare students for higher education, students learn essential career readiness skills while enrolling in higher education classes. Since students are not obliged to pursue higher education, many students who decide not to continue their education lack the skills necessary for future careers. While some schools hope to implement career readiness for either all their students or for only the students who do not wish to pursue college, other schools do not want to offer career readiness programs as they believe that it offers incentives for students not to attend college. Schools should require all students to take career readiness classes as…

High school students do not realize that when they get to college these classes force students, or encourage them, to learn responsibilities. You are now able to make all your own decisions: what you study and when you study it. Unlike high school, you are treated like an adult in post secondary classes. You are given responsibilities and tasks to complete on your own time after your professor has left the lecture. This allows you to shape your degree in anyway you want. Perhaps specializing in biology and chemistry to become a Physician, or majoring in accounting to become a Chartered Accountant. Whichever path you choose will be based on the decisions you make along the…

According to Zinsser, there are many students that are “highly motivated” in college, and have a dire need to succeed and graduate to a secure career that will provide them with financial security. Although this is important, William Zinsser stresses that students today are too narrow minded, and need to experiment and “learn that defeat is as instructive as victory and is not the end of the world.” In today’s world and with the current state of the economy students want to study fields that will reward them with high salaries or simply the major their parents choose for them. However, students should study the field they are passionate about and along the way, learn from their mistakes and come out with a tremendous amount of knowledge. Having studied a “wide variety of courses” is what William Zinsser says he would look for if he were an employer looking for employees. He values this type of person because over the years they have learned from their mistakes and are more qualified than “those who narrowly pursued safe subjects and high grades.” Most great accomplishments or inventions have come at the cost of many failures, but from those failures a wise person can learn, and apply that knowledge to overcome obstacles in life.…

As Swami Sivananda once said, “Put your heart, mind, and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success,” (“Inspiration Quotes”). During high school, people tend to put in all their effort to get good grades, get a high GPA, and join worthwhile activities. Most people also choose what they will be doing for the rest of their lives. Not only is it important that I pick something that I’ll enjoy, it’s also important that I pick out something that I would love to do without ever feeling weary.…

It is seen all too often where a student comes into college to pursue a major their parents had already preselected since birth. Mark Edmundson, author and English professor at the University of Virginia, states in his video, “Many students come into school having been primed by their parents and their teachers to go into business school, to go into an economics major, into a science major, whether they are a scientists or future business people in their hearts or not.” Here, Edmundson explains how students are easily influenced by their parents and usually go to college to major in something that make students unhappy. The effects of pursuing undesired majors are high dropout rates and throwing away thousands of dollars on degrees that people are not happy with. Aliena Tugend, author of the article, “Vocation or Exploration? Pondering the Purpose of College,” explains how a university should be a place to explore and experience other areas such as art and history (2). Being exposed to the humanities such as extracurricular activities, history, art, music and so forth, gives students more of a choice of what it is they want to do; it gives students more knowledge and more of a deeper meaning beyond just “required” prerequisite course and allows students to acquire the tools they need to succeed while in college and…
