I start my journey of my trip through the kingdoms and city-states of Africa today. I start out in Great Zaimbabwe in Southern Africa. Great Zimbabwe, the ruined city near Lake Mutirikwe and the town of Masvingo, close to the Chimanimani Mountains, along with the Chipinge District. Great Zimbabwe was seen as a place was seen as an important symbol of achievement for Africans, and regaining the history was a major aim for those seeking a majority rule. In 1980, the internationally recognized independent country was renamed for the site, and its famous soapstone bird carvings were retained from the Rhodesian flag and Coat of Arms as a national symbol and depicted in the new Zimbabwean flag. Later in 1980 it officially became the modern state it is today. I also learned that in 1350, Great Zimbabwe was a center for gold trade. Local people told me that people from across the southern Africa brought gold to the Great Zimbabwe. The city didn’t really have a social structure, it was just classes of rich and poor…

After reading the article Arranging a Marriage in India my first thoughts were why would any man or woman want to marry someone they are unfamiliar with, no nothing about them. I had the same mind as Serena Nanda who is the woman who got to experience it all while her trip to India. Of course my opinions had changed after reading the article, although I never had a problem with arranged marriages because I had been aware that some cultures do that as a lifestyle, but the idea of it kind of sounding like the parents are selling the daughter. As Serena mentions that how in the U.S we find the one we love and then marry after a few years of dating if it’s the right one of course, but now divorce rate is very high and it’s usually because it’s cheating or you just get tired of being with the same person. But how a women in India see it, they marry the guy that the parents have arranged them with and they seem to have a very flow and happy marriage, but how can that be? Is what I ask myself? They are people who have never talked or seen before yet they enjoy each other, although I like the idea on how when they marry they get to know each other and they aren’t tired of each other because it’s just the beginning of their marriage, it’s kind of like dating in U.S only they’re married. They interview with Sita, Sita mentions on how her parents have experience and they know what’s best for her when picking the right guy for her to get married with. While they are picking boys for her Sita doesn’t experience dating her parents do all the work for and all she does is goes to school and enjoys her youth she has more time to spend on her life instead of worrying about the man she might marry or boys. Sita’s reasoning was very understandable and I feel like I connect to that idea and that maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an arranged marriage, but I know that it really isn’t for me. Education in man is very important when the parents of a soon to be bride is looking…

Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s Matagari catalogs the story of Matagari, Guthera, and Muriuki as they look for truth and justice across their country. During this journey the story highlights many Biblical allusions that play a major role in the story development and how Matagari, primarily, looks for truth and justice. In order to understand the text, the reader must first understand the basics of Christianity and the Bible. The majority of the passages tell Guthera’s story, as she is the character who most relies on her faith in Jesus Christ and Christianity during the pursuit of justice. Understanding the Bible and Matagari’s goal as he fights the government is key for this text and for this manner of reading Matagari. As he writes he attempts to reach a wide spectrum, however specifically the oppressed in Kenya, as that is his homeland and what he strongly believes in. Therefore the usage of biblical allusions encourages the trio (Guthera Muriuki and Matagari) to pursue justice and act as the Christian Trinity, and functions as a way for citizens to revolt against the government.…

In the study of social movements, several theories have been advanced to explain why different actors in different social movements behave in particular ways. The theories put forth differ in perspective, which can be explained partly by the fact that different social movements take different approaches to voice grievances as well as recruit activists and adherents which can ultimately determine success or failure. The choice of theory to apply to a social movement is also dependent on the development, evolution, and ultimate success or failure of the movement. This paper will serve to examine existing research and literature on resource mobilization theory and apply it to the transnational anti-apartheid movement to see if the theory adequately explains the movement’s success.…
