Frank, Patrick. (2011). Preble's Artforms (10th ed.). New Jersey: Prentice Hall. ISBN 978-0-205-79753-0. This textbook is not available at the PBSC campus bookstore – see sources starting on page 3. The textbook sold in the bookstore has the chapters in a different order and may have other differences I am not aware of – it can be used, but be extremely careful to follow the specific chapter titles assigned.

A. Objectives related to critical analysis of major works of art The student will be able …show more content…
to: 1. Identify works of many masters in a variety of media. 2. Recognize the major periods of world art history. 3. Know the highlights of the biographies of a variety of artists as it relates to the meaning of their work. 4. Describe techniques used in a variety of art media. 5. Make a formal analysis of a work of art. 6. Recognize the principles of design in selected works of art. 7. Evaluate the importance of form in relation to content. 8. Understand the symbols used in iconographic art work.
B. Students must be able to write about art at the college level. The essential skills outlined in ENC ll0l and ENC ll02 will be reinforced.
A. Critical analysis of the arts in terms of these skills:
1. Students must be able to describe, analyze, interpret and judge a work of art using the visual elements as a foundation of their discussion. 2. Analyze and interpret the content of a work of art, resulting from the form and technique. 3. Discuss the form or design of a work of art dependent in relationship to the personality of the artist, or the cultural environment of his/her patrons. 4. Discuss the advantages and limitations of a variety of media. Be able to explain steps of specific techniques. Compare techniques used in a variety of media. 5. Interpret the narrative message of a work of art, based on history, religious or mythology.
B. Bring together art theory, definitions, practice and history in the course
1. Art as a consequence of thousands of years of development should be emphasized. The historic sequence in the development of the arts is discussed more than design, style or content. Students should be able to view a work of art in terms of its place in history as well as its design, style and content. 2. The language of the visual arts is stressed. The student will understand and broaden his/her vocabulary in terms of periods, styles, media and techniques. 3. Correlate art with the politics, culture or religion that influenced it. 4. Be aware that the invention of photography, digital arts, the Internet and media arts has influenced the visual arts. 5. Show the mutual influence non-Western and Western art have had upon each other. 6. Recognize examples of each of the major art styles as they are presented and discussed.
Attendance: Students are expected to log on to this course in the same way they would be expected to attend class meetings. If you travel, be sure you have access to the internet and keep up with the assignments - most public libraries offer computer access. Should you experience problems with your personal computer, Palm Beach State College provides computer labs where you can continue your studies. Failure to log on for two (2) consecutive weeks may result in withdrawal from the course.

Reading: Prebles’ Artforms by Patrick Frank - All chapters, but not necessarily in chapter order, please look at each week’s reading assignment in the Learning Modules.
Essays: There are two (2) essays on topic questions, each no less than 1,000 words. The essays are available throughout the semester, but once the deadline for each is past, the assignments cannot be made up. These assignments will use the Turnitin program to help you assess your work.
Quizzes: Five (5) quizzes are schedule during this semester. Each weekly module has a non-graded self-assessment you can use to practice before taking the graded quiz. Please note: Do not click on to the weekly graded quiz unless you are ready to complete the quiz. Also, once the deadline is past, quizzes cannot be made up.
Final Exam: One (1) final exam will be cumulative – there will be a non-graded final exam review you can use to practice before taking the final.

Grading: The value of the quizzes is 40% of the final grade, the essays are 40%, and the final exam 20%. Dates for these assignments are listed on the website both on the Calendar and in the weekly modules.
Grading Scale: A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=60-69, F=below 60.

No Quiz in this unit - Final Exam due Tuesday, July 31 at midnight.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated in this class. It includes the following actions, as well as other similar conduct aimed at making false representation with respect to the student's academic performance:
(1) Cheating on an exam,
(2) Collaborating with others on work to be presented, if contrary to the stated rules of the course,
(3) Submitting, if contrary to the rules of the course, work previously submitted in another course,
(4) Knowingly and intentionally assisting another student in any of the above actions, including assistance in an arrangement whereby work, classroom performance, examination, or other activity is submitted or performed by a person other than the student under whose name the work is submitted or performed,
(5) Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of other without giving them credit.
Students who commit any act of academic dishonesty will receive a zero for the assignment or test.
A second instance of cheating will result in an “F” for the class. The student may also be subject to disciplinary action.

Participation: Students are expected to participate in all courses and course activities for which they are registered. Any scheduled activity missed, regardless of cause, reduces the opportunity of learning and may adversely affect a student’s achievement in the course. Class attendance/participation policies are set by individual professors and/or departments. An accurate record of participation will be kept for each class. Students are expected to adhere to the policies set by each Professor.
Students, when officially representing the College, such as on a field trip, shall not be counted absent, provided their professors are given prior notification and any missed assignments are subsequently completed to each professor’s
satisfaction.
Students will be granted excused absences in the case of a substantiated emergency such as a confining illness, a serious accident or the death of an immediate relative. Professors decide on the validity of the excuses and provide opportunities for students to complete any required make-up work. Students are responsible for immediately informing their professors when they must miss class sessions for emergency meetings.
