Cow Milk Research Paper
Cow milk has been falsely advertised to make your bones stronger, in fact, it is quite the contrary; it has proven to make you more prone to bone fractures and osteoporosis. For example, cow’s milk is designed for calves, not humans meaning it has metabolic differences that actually have detrimental consequences on our bone health. One of those consequences is that milk is an acidifying animal protein meaning over time it decreases our bone density, making our bones weak and more likely to fracture. The most common reason why we are told to drink milk by doctors is to ingest the calcium that, will in turn, increase our bone health and density. In reality, the rate of the milk’s acids wearing down our bones is faster than the rate of the calcium making our bones stronger. So, essentially milk is actually making …show more content…
For example, a study in Sweden found that women consuming three or more glasses of milk a day over a span of twenty years had more bone fractures than those who did not. They were especially prone to hip fractures (“12 Frightening Facts About Milk”). Studies specializing in dairy and milk products have concluded that these products do not help prevent or reduce osteoporotic fractures. For example, the American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that the consumption of dairy products, particularly at twenty years of age, were linked to an increase of hip fractures in old age. This goes to show that even drinking milk at a young age does not decrease your fracture risk as you age, but in fact increases it (Debunking The Milk Myth: Why Milk Is Bad For You And Your Bones). Also, a twelve- year long study on 77,761 women from ages 34 through 59 at the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that the woman who consumed the most calcium from milk broke more bones than those who didn’t drink milk as regularly.     Osteoporosis has been associated with breakage in the hip, wrist, pelvis and other parts of the bones. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men and everyone has bone loss as they get older; however, consuming enough or adequate amounts of calcium early on in age can delay the effects of the bone loss. When there is not enough calcium absorbed in the body, the body begins to take away from the stored calcium in the bones in order to help maintain normal functions in the body, thus, causing the breakage in areas of the body. Supplements that contain calcium and vitamin D can help with the health problem and help or prevent many people from serious breakages when they fall. The FDA released a claim in 2003 stating that, "Adequate calcium throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis" and "Adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthful diet, along with physical activity, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life" (Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health, n.d.). In order for a person to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, they must first consume the recommended daily dosage of calcium which starts out at 200 mg for a baby until they are six months old, than from six months to 12 months it becomes 260 mg. Once they become a year old it is recommended to consume 700 mg until the age of three, than from the age of four-eight it jumps up to 1,000 mg. Once they hit the age of nine it is recommended to consume 1,300 mg until a person reaches the age of 19, than it goes back down to 1,000 mg and that is adequate until the age of 51 for males and 70 for females. It has become a very stated fact that calcium plays an important role in the health and well-being of our bones.
