He was born in Minnesota and was the oldest of four children. Both of his parents were teachers, his mom taught high school English and his dad taught College history. He graduated from Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota and he later went to St. Mary’s University which was also in Minnesota. There he got his Master of Arts degree in children and creativity. Night Driving, his first picture book was inspired by cross- country driving trips that his family took when he was young. As the oldest, he would sit up front with his dad and learned more about his father on those trips than he ever did anywhere else. Another book, Strong to the Hoop, got him involved in the National Basketball Association’s Read to Achieve program. The NBA later asked John to write about basketball since it was a game played worldwide. Later on the book Around the World was introduced for that very purpose. Later, Coy wrote Crackback, which follows the life of a football star. He continued to write books for younger readers, following the lives of basketball players, soccer players, and baseball
