26 October 2013 Psychosis/Crazy In Macbeth, Hamlet, and Death of a Salesman As you read the plays “Macbeth, Hamlet, and Death of a Salesman it becomes more and more appearent there is a lot of deranged activity going on within the plots. People become crazy and show there demented sides. Such as in the book Macbeth the main character Macbeth starts to hallucinate and hear noises, In the book Hamlet the main character Hamlet goes insane after his girlfriend dies, And in the book Death of a Salesman one of the characters Willy Loman talks to his brothers ghost and has frequent flashbacks. In this essay I will show you some examples and similarities. Psychosis, defined as “A severe mental disorder, with or without organic damage, characterized by derangement of personality and loss of contact with reality and causing deterioration of normal social functioning.”(the free dictionary) as you can tell from reading the stories there are a lot of characters in them that exhibit these traits. In the beginning of the play hamlet returns to denmark to find a series of tragic events happened while he was away. First avail he finds out his father has died due to a snake bite in the garden. To add to that news he discovers his mother has married Claudius his fathers brother. After hearing all of that news his runs into the castle gaurds who claim to have seen a ghost resembling the king. So Hamlet agrees to stand guard one night to see if the rumors are true, On that night the ghost does appear to Hamlet and it is indeed his fathers ghost. His fathers ghost tells him that Claudius has indeed murdered him to be king and the kings did not say his prayers before death so he was sentenced to walk earth hopelessly. Hamlet agrees to avenge his fathers death by murdering Claudius and setting his father spirit free. After that information hamlet is not yet crazy because he thinks the spirit may be a devil so he is a little
