The book, Crazy, was an interesting, and informative non-fiction book, about the struggles that mental health patients and their family members encounter. Pete Earley starts off the story by talking about his son Mike, who started to act strangely in his senior year of high school. It turned out that Mike would later be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and was prescribed medications. Mike thought he was fine, therefore would frequently stop taking his medications. When Mike was in the hospital, he refused treatment, and because he was not a danger to himself, a danger to others, or gravely disabled; the doctors could not force him into treatment. Because, Mike stops taking his medications, his symptoms got worse. Pete discussed a time that…
Legendary individuals are rare in our history, but if they succeed their name become immortalized within certain objects or actions. William H. Bonney was a man who did what he thought was just, but he is not remembered by any means. There is no familiarity besides misconception the he was one of the famous robber couple Bonny and Clyde, but his nickname Billy the kid is a name synonymous with such harsh descriptions as cowboy, gunslinger, rebel, and outlaw.(Billy3) No facts are famous about Billy; not even stories of his adventures. He isn’t famous for being a hero, nor a villain. Billy’s fame derives from pop culture references synonymous with the Old west only. His name and reputation have lived…

This issue of Living in the West explores the love affair we have with the great American Cowboy. Call them cowhands, cowpoke, cowpuncher or buckaroos, billions of dollars have been spent chronicling their storied history. With his Stetson hat, sunburned face, weathered dungarees and boots of leather, the cowboy has gone from a ranch hand to a blue color icon. In fact, America’s love affair with the cowboy has been around longer than the name “cowboy” itself. But I’m taking a left turn here because when talking about the old west, the only thing America loves more than a Cowboy…is an OUTLAW. I’m not referring to some 13th century, tight wearing, black-death carrying, tunic sporting, pan-pipe playing aristocratic…
The first person narrative poem ‘Father and child’ by Gwen Harwood, is structured in two sections each with seven stanzas and six lines. It focuses on an individuals revolt against authority and the consequences of such an action, as well as an insinuation of the imminent death of a parent. Harwood uses persuasive and implicit means to “mirror” the loss of innocence and its effect on the sense of appreciation or acceptance of the complexities existing in the wider world. Overall, ‘Father and Child’, demonstrates the individuals pursuit of power over the authoritative figure through defiance in the form of rebellion and destruction of authority. Through this Harwood challenges widely recognised stereotypes of purity and innocence associated with young girls and has also enriched my own perception on the connection between childhood memories and their effect on shaping an individuals identity.…
Family Guy is literature because of its references to social issues in today’s society. For example, models think they have to be super skinny in order to be a good model. There is also an episode about how ridiculous reality TV. shows are now and how easily it is to become famous. Also, this show portrays how obese our society is now by letting Peter eat as many burgers as he pleases because he saved a person. This show is not just a show to laugh at; there is a deeper meaning behind every episode that gives examples of how our society is today. Literature in this century consists of today’s problems and expressed in many new ways such as cartoons, online, and even in songs. Kids are no longer reading literature…
In the reading Good Dads - Bad Dads. Two Faces of Fatherhood. Furstenberg Jr. focuses on the two different types of fathers that can appear in a child's life. The first type of father he focuses is on is the modern father/good dad. The modern father attains nurturing, emotionally attuned and caring qualities. The author made a point that the modern father was recently discovered, and that fathers haven’t been that involved in their child’s lives until the early 21st century. Before the modern dad arose, a father was only the provider and nothing more. The second type of father that Furstenberg Jr describes is the bad dad. The bad dad is the type of father that denies paternity to his child. He choses to ignore is parental obligations and live…
I hate my foster mama, and so does many other people. She is way too violent all the time: “She possessed the unique ability to aggravate almost anyone she ever met” (Zusak 35). She has a temper issue. When she cannot control her temper, she usually beats me with a wooden spoon. Also, she swears too much. I have had no idea that… certain words existed until she would not stop using them. Because of her, I can swear fluently in German and English. Some adults might say, “What’s so bad about swearing?” Sure it is okay for adults to swear, but I am ten. Why is it a good idea to let a ten-year-old girl know how to swear fluently in two languages? I hat my foster mama so much. Actual mama, why could you have not kept me? Both of our lives would…

Children need someone to rely on in their lives and can not just count on their mothers. They need a strong male presence in their lives to lead and provide for them. A male role model will help children make better decisions in their daily lives. “It is acknowledged that children need structure, protection, stability and connection to develop and thrive. It is argued the father is important role, not only to support the main mother, but also to provide a caring, comfortable, confident presence,” (Stephenson 2). Kids need a male role model to take care of the family. One of the parents need to be at home to give children the physical and mental support they need through their childhood. When children do not…
