← homologous – structures of organisms related to one another through common descent (wing of bat, arm of human, flipper of a whale)…
-A phylogenetic tree reflects relationships between species. Branches that share a recent common ancestor represent species that are closely related; branches that don’t share recent common ancestors represent species that are more distantly related…
Comparative Anatomy: these studies provide strong support for evolution, these help to sort out evolutionary relationships. Homologous structures have a common evolutionary origin but have a different function (hand bones in a human, bat, and dolphins) Analogous structures have a similar function but have different evolutionary origins (bird wings vs. bumblebee…
CW Showell arrived at Downingtown East High school to speak with Christian Clark. CW observed Christian who appeared in good spirits. CW asked Christian about the incidents with his mother.…
Experiences, circumstances and values shape the way we think, and give us a foundation for what will become our “worldview.” In order to make a decision on what these beliefs are, we can make judgments based on both faith and scientific knowledge. The origin of Progressive Creationism brings lessons from the Bible into balance with evidence from contemporary science. Progressive Creationism makes room for explanations to scientific findings by interpreting a much longer time frame for creation, but it does not negate an God as being present at every stage, and responsible for the miracles of the creation of life. Influences that have led me to consider this position come from family, church, science classes, and my own personal interpretation…
In one of the grand theories of Freud vs. Erikson, I am strongly in favor of Erikson’s ideas as opposed to Sigmund Freud, in the fact that I agree that children’s developmental stages are more psychosocial than psychosexual. For example, I have two children of my own which I can correlate a lot of their behavior to Erikson’s stages. Babies cry in signal to their parents that something is wrong, when they feel nurtured and either the mother or father tend to their needs, such as diapering or feeding then they gain a sense of trust in their caregivers. My two year old son is at the stage now of initiative vs. guilt; whereas he has an adventurous spirit that leads him to “undertake many adult like activities” (Berger, 2014, p. 40). He is strong…
Jurassic Park, a cult favorite, seems to be a scary work of fiction. What most do not realize is that there are efforts taking place right now to make the processes of reversing extinction a reality. This process, coined as ‘De-Extinction,’ is defined as using intact tissues of extinct animals to clone them and introduce them back into existing ecosystems. These efforts are taking place all over the world: the United States of America, Australia, Poland, and Russia. (Zimmer, 2013) This process includes taking fragmented DNA from preserved specimens, piecing the fragments together, placing the DNA in an emptied egg, and planting the egg in a female of similar lineage to the species being cloned. (Archer, 2013) The first attempt at this process was in 2003 when Spanish scientists attempted to clone the cells of the last Pyrenean ibex, Celia. The…
Evolutionary theory explains the existence of homologous structures adapted to different purposes as the result of descent with modification from a common ancestor. Similarities and differences among homologous structures help determine how recently species shared a common ancestor. For example the front limbs of reptiles and birds are more similar to each other than either is to the front limb of an mammal. This similarity indicates…
As I enter into my second week in EDU605, I was given the opportunity to read and analyze an academic research paper that relates to differentiated instruction within my educational context. As I searched through articles and academic journals, I came across an interesting read. Charles Greenwood, Judith Carta, Howard Goldstein, Ruth Kaminski, Scott McConnell, and Jane Atwater presented their arguments on how the use of multi-tier approach to preschool language and early literacy instruction is the key for success for young learners who may be at risk.…
This article relates to Big Idea 1, that the process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. More specifically it falls under the subunit 1B, that organisms are linked by lines of descent from common ancestry. With the discovery of a new primate species more information is found about the evolutionary history of all primates, from monkeys to humans. This ancient primate is connected to the modern day lemur, and could potentially serve as a missing link in the early branches of various lemur species. This connection is based on the idea that all organism are linked by common ancestors, and the identification of species can be determined by these genetic…
The topic of gun control is hotly debated today. 50 % of the population are for it, believing that having a gun provides them with protection. Because of various reasons the government aren’t able to protect us, which is why people look for other ways to stay safe. However a gun is still a weapon. Despite the fact that people want to have to be on the safe side there were many accidents were an innocent people end up hurt unintentionally. Since Obama took office in 2008 there’s been about 23 mass shootings (Grider, 2015), 62 shootings at schools, 12,223 people killed in gun incidents and 24, 722 people injured(Gunter, 2015). There’s been shootings in Washington D.C, North Carolina, California, etc.…
If you look at the world around us there is great evidence for an intelligent Designer. The evidence is overwhelming as we regard the world that God has created and how fine-tuned it is. For example, our bodies have been intricately designed to show that it was not an accident that we exist, but there’s evidence for a Creator. Not only are we able to look around with our eyes, but we are also able to study the fundamental constants and quantities and see how fine-tuned this universe is. Scientists conclude that the fundamental constants and quantities of the universe have been carefully dialed to an astonishingly precise value. It is so precise that it falls narrowly into a life-permitting range, showing that even if one of the numbers were…
There are many different creation myths from different religions and different cultures. Two of the many creation myths are the creation myth of Genesis and the creation myth of India. Although these are both creation myths there are still some similarities and some differences between the two. The similarities between the Genesis and India creation myths are that both of the creators are benign and both of the Gods are supreme while the differences between them are that the reasons why man was created were different and the creations are accomplished in different ways.…
Myth still remains one of the major links that merges the different cultures and religions from various ethnicities. “The Creation of the Titans and the Gods”, as well as “The Creation, Death, and Rebirth of the Universe”, are among the many creation myths that highlight these combinations. Throughout history, myths have created various similarities and differences between the cultures and religions of the world.…
Have you ever thought about the things we teach at our public schools? How everything that is said to a student has an effect on the way they think or understand things. How are we sure that we teach them everything they need to know? And who decides the purpose or requirement of each class given? Education is to enlighten the young and naive to better their purpose in our society; and by teaching them both Evolution and Intelligent Design it give them more knowledge and a different way to look and examine things.…
