Creative diary entry of a man living in Weimar Germany before WWII

Life is really quite surreal here in Germany. I really don't know how to feel about the new Nazi rule that has been forced upon us. Life certainly is different, and I guess it will never be the same again. Well, not in the foreseeable future. We're pretty much stuck with it, and there's really nothing you can do about it, except for sit tight, and don't open your mouth too much.

It all started with that stupid treaty, 'The treaty of Versailles'. It put Germany in all sorts of problems, most importantly, it made the political state of Germany totally messed up, and there was nothing there really. Hyperinflation meant that there was a high unemployment rate, and the economic state was absolutely dreadful.

See now this man who was in World War One, a collage dropout, was a real passionate supporter of Germany. He was so passionate he staged riots and ended up in prison. During the eight months he was in prison, he wrote a book, called Mein Kampf, about how he disapproved of the system, and what he'd do to change it, and that really made people sympathise with him.

At this point German was in a quite dreadful state, even worse than when the treaty was signed. Hitler was gaining more and more support, with each speech a new wave of supporters, with each rally a new wave of supporters. This got so much that the German voters democratically made the Nazis the more popular party in Germany. I have to admit, I even voted for them. I really thought they were the answer, seriously, but how wrong I was. How wrong I was.

It all seemed so bright. There were posters everywhere, telling the stories of convert-nazis, who were saying about how great the nazi ideas were. At the cinemas too, there were pictures of proud Germans telling about how great the Nazis were. He even said, any workers could have medical benefits, and he made our lives seem so much simpler, and it seemed like it was able to make everyone happy. As the depression and the hyperinflation got more and more, people were losing their jobs, and not their lives were completely changing, for worse. Most important of all though, he promised to make Germany a great nation, and that was so appealing to everyone, as the current government wasn't exactly living up to our demands. The nazis were a way out of this terrible life, especially for those who has lost their jobs, as one of the main nazi policies was that they would make jobs for every person in Germany, and make it an industrial and prosperous country.

See, what they failed to mention is that to make everyone happy, they weren't going to help us in making our individual lives better. He wanted to make Germany a racist state and one where one of their favourite slogans was 'We think as our blood.' Enemies included the Communists, Socialists, and Jews, who the Nazis placed the whole blame on, for the all the events of world war one. Hitler even opposed the intellectuals, but recognised that they were essential if anything was to be done. Fortunately, this does not affect me because I do not fall into any of those groups, but it is wrong to discriminate against groups that are so prominent in society, and are extremely important if we are to keep a successful society.

So it all seemed to fall into place perfectly for Mr. Hitler. Firstly, the judges decided that his five year prison sentence should be lowered to eight months, because they felt sorry for him. Secondly, 'somehow' the parliament building is burned to the ground. Somehow is an important word there, because as this happened, the communist party, who were the only real rivals to the nazis, were banned from parliament, because there was a Dutch communist at the scene when it was burned down. After being tortured to near death, he 'admitted' to starting the fire. He even said that he wasn't a communist, but of course Goering refuses to believe him, because that would mean the whole plan failing. Finally, on the same night, all the leading Nazis who opposed Hitler, mysteriously died, on the same night. The elderly president dies, and Hitler is now official a complete dictator. Without argument, he becomes the single ruler of the country. No elections or anything, and all these events just fell into place, perfectly, and it just so happened that this made Hitler a single leader.

OK then, so now the kids. At school they are taught the most ridiculous things. So now at school, instead of concentrating on intellectual subjects, these have been replaced with things like, obedience, honour, courage, strength, and ruthlessness. They are also encouraged to join the 'Hitler Youth', which basically means, they are able to give their souls away in return for becoming robots that perfect, identical and obedient in every way. Fortunately, I have no children, but it's a scary thought that one day I may have a child, and he may go to school and be brought up taught that people with dark hair are superior to everyone else, and that it was because of Jews that Germany lost world war one.

So now, the Jewish were obviously getting quite worried, as gradually Hitler was talking more and more about his dislike for them, and placards were beginning to appear in parks, swimming pools and public transport saying 'Jews not allowed.' Hitler was a fan of the ideas used in Southern America, where they had placards saying 'No Blacks' and 'Caucasians Only'.

Think that's bad? Not only were Jews separated from society, Jews that had jobs as Civil Servants, Doctors, Teachers and Lawyers, lost their jobs, Jews were no longer considered German citizens, and it was made illegal for a Jew to marry and Aryan. This doesn't really affect me, but it's terrible that this is happening to people that we know and love, and people that are in our society.

What's an Aryan you ask me? Don't even get me started on that. This is just so weird. OK now, apparently, people with blonde hair and blue eyes are the 'master race.' Hitler himself has dark hair, and dark eyes. Yet, his vision of a perfect world contains people that are different to himself? This is so weird! So the perfect German is tall like Goebbels, slim like Goering, blonde like Hess, and heroic like Hitler? It's so difficult to comprehend why anyone would use these ideas. I am personally an Aryan, and in this society, I am therefore deemed 'superior' to everyone else, but this idea is so outrageous that it makes me want to pull my hair out and burn my eyes out with acid. I'm not joking, it's completely wrong that there should be a perfect race made up of Aryans. I hear that now they are only enrolling Aryans at universities now. Preparing for when everyone in Germany is Aryan I guess. Of course they won't educate them too hard, because otherwise they will be too intelligent.

So what do you think is the right we value the most? The right to think, of course. Well obviously, Hitler can't take that right away from us, so he goes for second best. The right to free expression and free speech. So what they do, they collect a huge database of intelligence, and send people onto the streets, so listen into people's conversations, and make sure nobody speaks out against Hitler or the Nazi Party. How do they make sure this happens? The Gestapo is set up, a secret police, that makes sure that everyone who even thinks about speaking out against the Nazis, is arrested, re-educated, maybe even hanged. These people wear normal clothes, and behave normally, but they are everywhere, and you don't know where they might be. It's safer just to say nothing. It's probably safer not to think anything too. You never know what might happen. It's a scary place here. I'm not even sure I should be writing this down in case someone finds it.

Why aren't we doing anything about this I hear you ask? Well we really can't, and even if we tried, there is a very strong chance that we would be beheaded, or 're-educated'. Trying to overthrow the nazis democratically is no use either. Who are the leading parties? Communists? No, they have been banned from running because they burned down parliament. Social Democrats? No, they're banned too. What about all the other parties? The Catholic and Nationalist parties are now illegal, and the Gestapo has arrested the leaders of all the other parties.

I am one that is more fortunate. I have blonde hair, I am physically able to work, I am childless, I'm not intelligent, I am not religious, I don't open my mouth a lot, I'm not very politically active or rebellious, I don't even think a lot and I am a born German. I guess It's not so bad, as long as you fall in to every single one of those categories you're not in trouble. So what about the millions of people that are Jewish, disabled, intelligent, rebellious, Communist, dark haired, politically active or even someone who likes to think a lot?

I don't understand. I don't understand.

So we've lost our right to free speech and we've lost our right to vote. I think we've lost the plot completely.

So now only a select group of people can now be considered 'true Germans', and the rest, well, I guess they're no use are they? After all, they are all handicapped, and they are no use in the long term are they? I honestly don't see how that works. It's ridiculous. Germany will not last, it's only a matter of time before the good people of the earth come here and sort out this mess of a leader, and this mess of a government.

I guess for the people that don't fit into the group of 'True Germans', I really dread to think of what could happen to them. I guess one group at a time they will be dealt with, and who knows what could happen. It's quite extraordinary that something so bad as this has happened to this nation. It's truly awful.
