Canyon Gemme

You have been doing the same climb for years. Scraping your knees on rocks, pulling through the brush. This was your favorite time to do it. Right as the sun was kissing the horizon of the sea, and the sky begin to let go of the night. It is colder than usual today, but you don't mind. The salty air pulls you forward motivating you with its sharp breath. As you come to the top of the cliff, you begin to see the glassy ocean lazily lapping upon a silver beach that seems to come out of a long, jagged cliff that disappears into the sea. You take a deep breath in and close your eyes, letting your imagination run wild. When you open them, the same familiar scenery fills your vision. You watch as an Osprey circles down the side of the cliff, and then it disappears into its jagged side. You are witnessing the gentle waves brush up on the sand, when a small movement catches your eye. At first you don't know what to make of it, it appears to be a black speck dancing along the glowing sand. But as it

You look at her in shock and she looks at you. You pull back away from her, and she takes a step back from you. The storm gets worse, the wind and sand hurt your skin and the rain stings your eyes. You bend over so you can cover your face with your arm for a moment. And when you look up the sand is so thick you can only see her outline. She is crouched over just like you are, you think she is hurt so you push through the storm to her. You place an arm on her shoulder and she does the same for you. When you are both standing you look at her face and you have to hold back a scream of shock. The girl is gone, and the only person who is there is you, you and yourself. You realize that there never was a girl, there was always just you. You have been looking at the actions you were in aware of doing, and just now are you beginning to understand that everything you do has its effect on the

This is a brief poem titled “Neighbors.” It may brief, but there is a deeper message than can be found in between the lines. The mountains were stone dark, secured with trees whose hues were a blend of woodsy cocoa, knoll, key lime, and margarita green. Scattered powder-puff mists gradually fled over the sky and the sun feed like a bolt. Seeing this made me feel like I inadvertently touched base to paradise. I breath gradually, attempting to recall each snapshot of me being encompassed by woodland, sky, and mountains. We began climbing the gigantic mountain, talking, grinning and chuckling together. After like an hour we sat down for a moment on an immense uneven and dusty rock close to the waterfall. The wind that blew through the trees into our confronts now conveyed a light sprinkle from the waterfall, and a clue of peace. The sound of the wind shrieking, the waterfall smashing against the stones and the fowls singing their wonderful tunes, made me feel considerably more joyful than I was at that point. We began moving to the top once more. My legs began to hurt yet I didn't give an indication of my torment. I raised my eyes to the sky, and my sight fell on the hawk who skimmed over the wind. At that time, I craved flying as well, over the mountains and over the oceans. I strolled slower now, thinking how brilliant it would be to fly, and the greater part of the…

Through reading excerpts from Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke and Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, Rilke’s counsel to the young poet applies greatly to the main character in David Mitchell’s story, Jason Taylor. Both of the works are to poets from someone who is giving advice, however, Jason Taylor does not seek advice, while the young poet does. The advice given to the poets is similar and helpful to their cause.…

After hoping the fence to get to the trail to begin the ridged hike, birds chirped and you could occasionally hear a branch break deep in the woods. Walking up the narrow hill through the deep forest was my favorite thing in the world. I felt free and had no worry in the world. And the view at the top of the mountain was even better. The beginning of the hike for probably a mile is a very calm and nice walk, but it starts to incline more and more from their. The trail opens up to huge clear cuts. through one of the clear cuts is a perfect view of Enumclaw. as you pass the clear cuts the trail begins to narrow again. The trail begins to become very steep and lesser of a trail. Cutting through harsh terrain for s short time that led to the last…

In Emily Dickinson's poem "I Felt a Funeral in My Brain", Dickinson describes what seems to be a funeral in her mind. When one thinks of a funeral, they usually think of a ceremony for a person who has died. This funeral that Dickinson is experiencing in her brain, is actually a funeral for the death of her mind. Emily Dickinson describes events that usually take place at a funeral but the ideas she pitches to the reader doesn't exactly exemplify your ideal funeral. She tells the reader how there are mourners, a service, lifting of a box implying it is a coffin and nobody is being burried. In Emily Dickenson's poem, the reader can elaborate upon elements of poetry such as imagery, symbolism, diction, and metaphor that create a better sense of understanding.…

Once I felt as though I could do it, I let my heart rate settle a little bit and then walked towards the daunting ledge. I looked over the ledge at the water below and had to take one step back and regroup. I was trying to drown out the members of my family who were saying things like “you can do it!”,“You’re almost there” and, “I believe in you”, but after hearing those things I realized it was much needed, it gave me a boost of confidence. I walked back to the ledge, turned my back to the open water, and faced the gigantic rock I would be attempting to climb down. I gripped my hands tightly on the cold rock and moved one foot down the side until I found a small ledge I could rest my foot on. The only thing that was going through my mind was the possibility of the rope holding my weight, preventing me from falling, could break and I would fall and hit the hard rocks below me. Hot tears were streaming down my bright red face, I was looking up at my family through my vision blurred with tears of…

My family and I lounged at a local seafood shack on the outdoor patio during our vacation to California. Starving, we eagerly awaited our food when finally the sizzling crispy fish and chips came to our table. We happily chomped down on our delicious meal. Afterward we sat there and enjoyed the views of the Pacific Ocean and the smell of the salt breeze. As I watched the tall masted sailboats serenely rock at the splintered wood dock, my eye was suddenly drawn to something moving in the water.…

Black Diamond Night (a coalminer’s cemetery) Where the ebony, we call “NIGHT”, Old black rocks sit under the twilight. Diamond shape eyes unclear and lonely, Sinister through hostile spirits only, I stumble across these stones without a bone. A solitary confinement alone, From a barren zone the light transcend. Only in time, our minds will mend. Endless valleys and limitless stones. These bones- these bones they sit alone. The abyss, of rotten cavities with no fill, A system no power can unwell the drill The blood that passed over without a spill. Peaks collapse into a spellbinding chill. They are trapped! They are trapped! Another diamond in the rough. Is what they left. Obsessed by the dead without a death. Death that impatiently awaited their last breath. Gushing, unto the gems of dead chemistry, Diamonds holding its own intensity, These lonely graves, on top of sycamore hill. Coal mining hearts that will never heal. If only shiny eyes could see? These lonely bones inside of me! Moving in every direction possible Flowing in every direction noticeable. Sockets without eyes. Stones hiding under the cobalt skies. The mad sparkles, the madness dies. Throughout this mass, we held in the blasphemous. Intervening lots of gems so miraculous. Into a stone of self-religion, A black night filled of legions. Acknowledging the souls capacity of free. Near the frail bones that sit alone, Alone they sit in a morbid home. Through a path unclear and all alone, Troubled by the visions of my own stone. Where the night takes place in the dark. The ebony rides under the diamond bark. Along with the coalminers who never got to see the; “Diamonds of another…
