Creative Writing: Elie Wiesel's 'Night'
The Shadow The glistening, white snow fell slowly to the ground outside the window. The distinct shapes of the snowflakes shown; the light from the street lamp seeping through the cracks. The mumble of the heater in the corner of the room; the faint sound of the blood dripping onto the floor were the only sounds. He lay there; motionless. The thuds were entering the silent room once again. The creaking of the wooden floor grew louder and louder. Still the light of the street lamp shone through the window and onto the far wall. The nasty figure walked into the murky room. Only its shadow appeared on the far wall behind it. The boy in the bed was Eli. His tiny eight year old body was red with his own blood. Then…

Eli grabbed his face with a little whimper.
“Answer me child!”
“Are you…?” Eli finally replied.
“Yes Eli, I'm your father.”

The ride to the hospital was the worst thing Eli has ever had to go through. He was bleeding out and was in excruciating pain. His arms we cut all the way down, and his feet and legs were sliced. His father was driving slow just to put him through the pain.
Eli’s dad abused him before he disappeared. His mom worked all of the time and he got sick and tired of it. He wanted to divorce her, but she wouldn't allow it, so he left. And never came back.
They got to the hospital and Eli was almost completely out cold. His father made him walk into the ER by himself. Luckily, doctors saw him in the parking lot and came out with a stretcher to help him. They rushed him into the ER and stopped the bleeding. They stitched him up and he started to come back. He was pale and quiet but he was alive.
“Hi Eli. I'm Dr. Whitern.”
“Hi…” Eli said, dragging his words.
“Your father is outside in the car and it seems you are ready to go home. You may be a little drowsy, but just rest and you will recover quickly.”

My brother stormed into my tent. A thin line of dried blood layed over his left eye and all the way down his face “Gregor! He’s dead! Aswell, as BenJen!” I shot up, trying to act suprised. “What do you mean?” I asked sounding confused “I mean they where murdered last night. A man tried to kill me as well, but his face aws covered.” I tried to stop myself from smiling “I’ll come see momentairly.” Marak turned and walked out akwardly. First, his age had a large effect on the way he formed to his surroundings. Elie was removed from his home at an early point in his life. Without the experience that many of those around him had, he was not able to react in a way that reflected his experiences. Secondly, this was most likely the first instance that he had been separated from his family for such an extended period of time. An abrupt and unpredicted separation such as this would be very likely to stick in the back of Elie’s mind, causing decisions driven by a moment of pain in the past. Third, the large volume of suffering that Elie was put through had a major impact on his style of coping with his loss of innocence. As it was put by Viktor Frankl, “If there is a meaning in life at all, then there must be a meaning in suffering. Suffering is an ineradicable part of life, even as fate and death. Without suffering and death human life cannot be complete (Frankl 16).” Even though suffering is a part of life, Elie is like a deer in the headlights when the sudden exposure misery reveals itself. He has simply never seen these abominable acts be performed on such a large…

Anyway he rushed us to the hospital. We entered the emergency room hoping that we would see him right away, but we couldn’t. It took us about ten minutes until they let me go in, those were the longest ten minutes, it almost felt like hours. I entered the room and my eyes caught the pile of his shredded clothes covered with blood on the floor; his favorite shoes with the laces cut off. I was hysterical, I was yelling “Why!!!” the nurses prepared me not only to expect seeing the unthinkable, but to accept what…
