Creative Writing: Homeless Girl
Jake woke up and did his usual routine. He made his bed, brushed his teeth, got on his work clothes, and headed off in his truck. Most of the town’s folk admired Jake. Jake was a pretty wealthy man. He drove a red, shiny Ford pick-up truck that could go as fast as any other car in the town. Jake has had it for more than five years, but he always makes sure it looks good. Jake has been single his whole life single. He’s 24 and still is searching his whole life for a perfect girl. Jake doesn’t realize that this is the week he finds his perfect girl; but it’s not as he expected.

Jake headed off to work on a hot morning of June of 2012. Jake was the head of the Sand Diggers Crew. Jake lived in the Mohave Desert all his life memories were. He

You must be dehydrated.”

Jake went and drove to the worksite. Trying to forget all that happened he thought about the girl. She was beautiful in Jake’s eyes. With her long brown hair and her smooth silky face. But the thing was, she was dirty; like a homeless woman. Jake let the thought go. He thought it was all an illusion.

The next day Jake went to work again. As the day went on he kept hearing noises. “Help ME!’ they’d say. “Please, Help ME!”

Jake ignored them until the girl appeared again. She stood next to one of the holes.

“Hey! Watch out!” Jake yelled at her, but it was too late. She had fallen in. Jake ran after her. He jumped in the hole after her. Jake knew that there was a very high chance that he would die. But what had he lived for. Money did not matter to him. He had no wife, no kids, his parents were dead, and all his life he had fought the fact of suicide. As Jake fell down the hole he passed through some type of purple force field.

“Was I dead already?” Jake

Then the noise stopped. Jake stood in the middle of a large area of the cave. There were hieroglyphics all over the walls and right in front of him was the girl. But she wasn’t the same as before. As Jake watched, she turned into smoke and changed into a giant beast. The Beast had large horns and sharp teeth. Its skin was red and its face was on fire. Jake ran. He ran as fast as he could until him and the Beast were as far away as possible. Jake ran until he could run no more. He had put much distance between him and the Beast. Jake sat there. He was exhausted and tired and all he wanted to do was be home. He didn’t care about anything else. Jake fell

Instead, their eyes glanced at the darkened woods, wondering if there was something following them like in one of Chief Black’s stories. While he knew the ghost tales weren’t true, Collin’s sensitive hearing did pick up the fact that there was indeed something out there, but he wasn’t alarmed at all as his nose told him exactly who it was. Finally, Collin found his voice. “You said that you are new here. Where’d you live…

Written in third person limited, this short story is a vivid portrayal of gender roles. Looking in the perspective of a gender critic, one might say that the character of Jake is very persistent. At first, Jake asks Mariana if she would like to go have breakfast and talk it over. After Mariana turns down his offer, Jake attempts to take her out again and says, "Some coffee then?"(629). However, his second attempt is yet again rejected. Then, Jake thinks to himself that she might be married and says to her, "You're not married are you? Not that that would matter that much to me. I'm an open-minded kinda guy." (629). Still very eager to take her out, Jake is unsuccessful to change the mind of Mariana. However, through this dialogue,…

According to the Homelessness in Arizona 2011 Annual Report there were 25,000 individuals who experiences homelessness in 2011 (Homelessness in Arizona 2011 Annual Report, pg. 3). I personally, along with other students and faculty of Arizona State University, take the valley light rail to campus every day to class and often at night. As a result, we have become accustomed to seeing and interacting with the homeless community; whether by choice or they [homeless individuals] come(s) up to us. I have nothing personally against the homeless but they do create hostility and cause students such as myself to feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Another thing that can come into play when dealing with the homeless people of Tempe is the fact that they travel on the light rail from all over the valley. We as a…

Determinants of health can include genetics, income, nutrition, education, social relationships, gender, access to health care services, and personal behaviors. While a child in a homeless situation may not have the ability to change their genetic makeup, gender, and ethnicity, these factors still affect homeless children in many ways. For example, genetic-related illness may sometimes be exacerbated in a bout of homelessness. Also, there is evidence that shows that African-American and Hispanic children have disproportionately higher rates of homelessness than those of other ethnicities. In addition to genetics and ethnicity, homeless children that are males of a certain age are often excluded from overnight temporary shelters.…

The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…

    Character in Love in L.A.

Fiction Response When reading the short story “Love in L.A.” by Dagoberta Gilb most readers will notice the importance of the characters and how they shape the outcome of the story. This story is truly character driven, meaning the plot relies on the characters, which makes it a very powerful literary element in this case. Jake, the protagonist of the fictional piece, can easily be envisioned as a young man with a carefree attitude who does not really care much about other people and their situations. One can tell Jake is definitely a pretty young man due to some of the things he daydreams about at the beginning of the story and the fact that he is daydreaming instead of paying attention to the road. Some of these thoughts include the brief idea of getting a steady job and his fantasies regarding his lifestyle (Gilb, 113). His carefree attitude can be seen through his dialogue with Mariana after the accident with remarks such as “So how ya doing? Any damage to the car? I’m kinda hoping so, just so it takes a little more time and we can talk some. Or else you can give me your phone number now and I won’t have to lay my regular b.s. on you to get it later.” (Gilb, 114) Even though Jake has just been in a car accident he was at fault for that could have severely injured someone he still has the idea of flirting with one of the other drivers involved. Jake is also the kind of guy who prefers to stay out of trouble for his own sake and his wallet’s, which is why he gives Mariana false information and uses license plates from scrapped cars in order to avoid paying for things he doesn’t want to pay for (Gilb, 114-115). Jake’s young, carefree attitude is seen again after he drives off from the accident with him instantly going back to fantasizing about making his car awesome without a single worry about what just happened (Gilb 115).…

It was the beginning of June, a steamy summer day in Florida. School was in recess so I was able to sleep late that day. When I woke up I mentally sorted out my schedule. “Nothing much,” I thought, “just a normal day; work then home.” I got out of bed, ate breakfast, took a shower, and got ready for work at the local sandwich shop. I did not expect to receive an unforgettable call at work from my then girlfriend’s sister, Jahaira.…
