Creative Writing: Land Here Santa
The rooftop was iced with a cushion of snow, merging with the creamy-purple twilight sky. Shovelled into the rooftop snow, a pale red sign read “Land Here Santa”. The sign was flaking and the wood was splintering, but it still brought the same vibrancy to the little cottage. The cottage itself was built with rich auburn brick with a white lining. An extensive string of sprightly festive lights ran along the eave of the roof, illuminating the street, spreading warmth through a bitter morning. A snowflake flickered across the driveway, melting into the asphalt ahead of the front door. On the door, a Christmas wreath was pinned onto the steel tarnishing knocker.
It may have been a chilly winter outside, but none could be more dissimilar inside the cottage. Warm air filled the hallway, entwined with sweet aromatics of fresh gingerbread. The fur of the pine green carpet, absorbed footsteps and heat. Through the oak door resided the living room. Adjacent to the wall was a weary and discoloured couch, with a familiar stain living among the cushioning of the seat. Opposite the couches was a synthetic nine foot tree. Mountains of presents lay at the base, each filled with toys to entertain a child

The only door of any importance however was the door directly in front, leading to a tiny room not fit for a full sized adult. Inside the room along the far wall, was a pine bunk bed with colourful blankets. Lego bricks of an assortment of colours were sprawled across the floor, creating a minefield of temperamental pain when navigating around with bare feet. The windows were far too high up to out of, but allowed rays of peach light to illuminate all four corners of the room. Diagonally from the window, along the wall hung two Christmas stockings; furry red with a bleach white trim swaying with the current of hot air. They brought a jolly atmosphere to the already exuberant

An old house sits on the top of a hill in a small town named Rikes, Wisconsin. It is December in Rikes and the house is covered in snow, with barely any wood left showing. The wooden house is not visible from the nearby street because it is engulfed by thick forest. The house is owned by Frank Nelson, but many people in town refer to him as “Saint Nick” because he is the Santa Clause at the local church. He is in his seventies and he is a widowed husband, no one in town knows about what happened to his wife because he had moved there after she had died. Though some thought this was weird, it did not raise many concerns around town, but most of the parents feel uneasy about Frank because he has had a bad record with the cops and his drinking…

A Christmas Carol Assessment: Writing Assessment Everybody knows the classic Christmas story, “A Christmas Carol”, and are most likely familiar with The Three Ghosts of Christmas. The version I was assigned to read was a shorter version of the original and did not include all the same events. But of course, it included the ghosts. How Was Ha’s Life Turned Inside Out Ha, a ten year old girl and her family have to flee their home in Saigon in the novel Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. Ha’s story is very similar to that of other refugees around the world. Refugees are defined as “people who are residing outside their countries and cannot return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group”. Upon entering my house, you notice the mismatched brown and blue plaid couches under bare walls. A huge television blocks the only window in the room, with an old scratched coffee table groaning under a weeks worth of mail. Guacamole colored shag carpet over powers the cheap Asian rug trying to smother it. The blue and brown couches are as comfortable as reclining on bales of straw covered with course burlap. A pomegranate candle sits on top of the television and is lit every morning to drown out the subconscious avocado smell from the 70's shag carpeting. Walking through the living room into the kitchen, overcoming the feeling of claustrophobia because of large furniture in a small place, you will see four doors and an office area.…

When considering novels aimed at children, one of the most common features which appears in many subgenres is that of the house. The house represents many things to the child reader and as such it can be portrayed in multiple ways. In some novels the house is a place of safety, where the child character’s family resides. In others the house can take on a darker tone and, particularly in children’s horror, it can fulfil a role that is much more common to that of the gothic novel. Two novels which explore different representations of the house are The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder, which presents the house in a much more traditional safe place and Coraline by Neil Gaiman, which presents…

Waking up bright and early, I hoped out of bed and rushed downstairs to the Christmas tree. Seeing that I was the only one awake at seven in the morning, I seized the moment. I began searching from present to present, trying to pick out my presents from the rest of them. Once I had gathered my neatly wrapped presents into a stacked pile, I had given each gift a quick test to try to determine if I got what I wanted. I gave the gifts the weight test, the shake test, and looked at the size of it. I even went to the extremes by making a slight unnoticeable tear in the snowman wrapping paper trying to guess what was inside.…
