Creative Writing: A Day at the Park

It was a day I was subconsciously waiting my whole life for, but I didn't realize it until it was happening. The day was August 8, 1996, just 25 days before my son's first birthday. The Texas Rangers, my favorite baseball team, were in town to play the K.C. Royals. I had always dreamed of one day, taking my son to his first Rangers game. A father taking his son to a baseball game is just the American thing to do, and there I was, taking my son "out to the ball game"; Americas favorite pastime. I hadn't been to see a Ranger game in years and had been wanting to, for quite a while. But like many other young married couples, we didn't really seem to have the time, nor the money. We decided to splurge and buy general admission tickets. Well it was about three hours before the game, and one hour before I got through with work. All of a sudden my phone rings, and it was my mother-in-law "wondering" if I wanted a couple of free view box tickets and a parking pass, for that nights Ranger game. I couldn't have been more excited, much less believe my luck. After I got off work , and picked up the tickets, I raced home to get my wife and son ready to go. Over the next half hour, I almost regretted having to bring my son, what with the hassle of getting the diaper bag packed , the traffic, and fighting the crowds while pushing a stroller. It was hectic, but I survived. Finally we were situated and ready for the game. The singing of the national anthem was finished and we were waiting for the first pitch. All of a sudden it hit me, for some reason I couldn't have been prouder. There I was, holding my son and watching my childhood heroes, sharing his first major league baseball game. Now I don't know if what I felt was brought on by television fantasy, or just sheer pride and joy, but I do know that I felt like a million bucks. After about ten minutes my son started to get restless, and my wife had to walk

The batter immediately saw this and balked. The batter was fazed. Caleb saw this and smirked in his mind. Caleb started his motion, coiled up, and threw the ball as hard as he could. The batter swung and sent the ball sailing into left field. Blake ran and ran and ran. Finally, the ball came out of orbit into Blake’s sure handed glove. Out number two. Blake sent back a priceless expression that summed up the entire game. “Dodged a bullet there” he yelled to us. The entire team erupted with laughter. Even Coach joined in. It took a light-hearted phrase like that to lighten the mood in such an intense game. Baseball was meant to be played for fun, not just to…

After we warmed up it was time to play the final game. We were the home team so we were in the field first. I was playing center field and it was so hot outside that I felt like I was going to melt. When the umpire yelled, ”Play Ball!” I jumped up on my feet and was ready for the first pitch. On the very first pitch the batter hit the ball straight to me. I watched the ball go up in the air and I was putting my glove up in the air ready to catch the ball but then I lost track of it. My sunglasses did not help me with the sun. I was trying to find the ball, but then SMACK! The ball hit me straight in the mouth and I fell to the ground like a sack of…

And to finish up that inning we just got a couple ground balls and we turned a double play. And for the next few innings nothing really happened both teams were struggling to hit. Now it's like the 5th inning and we have the top of our hitting order up so we had:Liam,Luke,Ryan,Alex as our 1,2,3,4 hitters. And we got a rally going and we scored a couple runs so at this point the score is 5-1 and we have the lead so then I go into the 6th inning to pitch and I can only do ⅔ of the inning so than Ryan comes in and pitches and to finish out the 7th Alex pitches a 3 strikeout inning. So the game was over and the presedent of the league gave me the game ball to keep and bring home and everyone on our team got a trophy to take home after we won we were all so happy that we won the championship because it was or a lot of people the first time they won something. The…

“GET HOME!!! GET HOME!!!” Those were the words my dad would yell from the third base coach’s box as I passed him rounding third! Baseball to me is more than just a game! Baseball is a passion, fueled by the desire to succeed, the passion to overcome, and the dedication to be great. A baseball field to me is like a stage is to a dancer or an open road for a biker; I just love every aspect of this amazing sport. It’s the field with its seemingly unfair depth, its soft green grass and the infamous red dirt, that make me have the passion for the game like my father did as a child. My life seemed to be limitless when I was in between that fence. Taking cuts on the tee, putting together a pickup game that didn’t matter who won or lost, or even on those days that practice seemed to never end, I still had the love for the game.…

I got to my team's field and saw the perfectly chalked batter's box and baselines. I went into to the dugout and saw the lineup and I was batting first! I had the same excitement in this moment as I do every time I get a king size crunch bar on Halloween. I started to warm up and I felt good. Game Time was coming up but it felt like forever. I was getting the feeling that you get when you put a hot pocket in the microwave and your are waiting for that very very long minute. The ump told us to go to the dugouts and we knew it was game time. I got my helmet and batting gloves on and grabbed my bat. I took a couple swings in the on deck circle then I stepped into the batter's box. I swung at the first pitch and heard a sweet pop off my bat and watched my line drive hit land in front of the centerfield man and I was on first base with a leadoff single. All the nervous energy I had was…

    My Baseball Moment

It was a week away and surprisingly I was calm for the upcoming event. Usually I would be nervous from the top of my head all the way down to the bottom of my toes, but I had so much confidence that it was inspiring to others. Knowing that the big day was 2 days away, of course I had to go out and buy new equipment so I could not play the part, but also look the part. Shortly after buying a new Nike helmet, Swingman batting gloves and a brand new solid pro maple SamBat I immediately went to the cages. The bat had the biggest sweet spot and the most pop out of all my bats. The ball hitting of the barrel sounded like gunshots. I felt like taking a million swings, but I knew if I stayed there for a long time I would be a little tired for the big day so I only took 100 swings and called it a day. Finally the next day I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock with the mindset of determination. I quickly got dressed in the proper sports attire and fled out the house with my brother. On the way there I had the speakers on blast playing the most inspiring and highest BPM songs I had on my play-list. After arriving to the parking lot I had walked to the front entrance of the stadium where they had given me a shirt with a specific number and a cap so it could be worn on the field. After suiting up and taking the first step on the field, the amazing view of the inside of a baseball stadium had me speechless. Knowing that professionals play here too had me feeling proud that I was doing something with my life and that hopefully it was going to lead me somewhere better. Before starting all the drills and the showcasing of the performance of the players, the commissioner of the league had a few words to say. Shortly after the speech was done, we had finally started to begin! Everyone was split into different groups. Some kids were hitting, some were pitching, and some were taking ground balls. I was put into the hitting…
