CREEP TEST DEMONSTRATOR

EXPERIMENTS
OBJECTIVES
To determine the effects of temperature and load on creep strain for four different materials: Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polyvinylchloride and Lead.
PROCEDURE
1. Mount the specimen inside the test area by using the mounting screws.
2. Support the beam by raising the support screw (I) until it slightly lifts the beam (G).
3. Close the doors of the test area and switch on the main power (D).
4. Adjust the temperature to a desired value by using the temperature controller (A).
5. Switch on the heater (E).
6. Wait for the temperature inside the test area to achieve steady-state.
7. Then, lower the support screw until it no longer supports the beam.
8. Adjust the dial gauge (F) so that it gives a zero reading.
9. Attach the weight hanger (H) and desired amount of weights at the end of the beam.
10. Set the timer (B) to one minute, and switch on the timer (C).
11. Once one minute has elapsed (the alarm should trigger), record the dial gauge reading.
12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for additional readings.
13. Once the experiment is over, switch off heater, timer and main power.
14. Tabulate the results, and plot the graph of strain vs. time.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Always wear gloves when attempting to retrieve a hot specimen to avoid injury. If possible, allow the specimen to cool down for at least 10 minutes before removing it from the oven.
2. Do not set the temperature to exceed 80°C, as this may cause damage to electrical components and sensors in the unit.

In a lab, you must always make safety a priority in case of an emergency. In our lab, we made sure to wear closed-toed shoes as well as goggles at all times. We also performed part of our experiment in a fume hood in order to protect ourselves from any potentially dangerous fumes. We made sure not to touch the hotplate, and also to use tongs when picking up a hot beaker.…

Other safety concerns associated with this exercise are basic lab precautions, including keeping a clean workspace, washing your hand after dealing with chemicals and blood, and using precaution when obtaining blood samples. In order to ensure that this occurs, layout the equipment beforehand in a clean sterile environment and clean the work space after experiment. By doing so, this reduces the risk of contamination or cutting yourself when using the tools. Use gloves, masks, and goggles at all times.…
