Cresting School Of Music-Personal Narrative
The gates towered above us as we stared at the old brick building. Cresting School Of Music. The place I had dreamed of my whole life, now leaving me quaking with fear. After 10 years I had finally saved enough money and could now attend, although it was only on a partial scholarship. But that was enough. Just the chance to perform was enough. And I know you would expect a place like this to be just boring classical music but there was so much more. They even started the top band in the state, The Flow.
“You ready C?” My sister said squeezing my hand tightly.
“I don’t know Mir. I’m scared I’m gonna screw this whole thing up.” I said biting on the inside of my cheek, an annoying habit I had when I was nervous.
“Hey don’t worry about it Celia. You’re amazing ok? Mum and dad would be so proud.” She said smiling slightly. My stomach clenched at the thought of my parents but I pushed my thoughts aside, taking a deep breath and stepping through the heavy iron gates, Miriam by my side. Let’s do this.
The inside of the school wasn’t nearly as grand as the outside. To be completely honest it was…well plain. Like any normal college. Normal hallways, normal people, normal atmosphere. If anyone were to walk in they wouldn’t know the difference. But I knew and that was enough to get my heart racing in anticipation. I could

And then I would always wake up to the sound of his snoring on the other end of the line. But then the love songs turned to sad song. And as time went on he changed. He was no longer the sweet guy who would always make me laugh even when I thought I would never smile again. No longer the guy who would do anything to spend just a second of his time with me. All of a sudden he couldn’t control his anger anymore. He had sudden outbursts when I least expected it. One day it all just got too much and I left. I enrolled at this school and turned my back on the

“Slow down, future leaders of America at play,” a sign engrained in my memory as a result of the numerous volunteer trips I took to Mountain Mission School. Mountain Mission School (MMS) is a Christian boarding school and home to many children, who come from devastating backgrounds and poverty. Receiving no government funding, Mountain Mission School located in Grundy, Virginia operates solely on private donations and generous charities from churches all over America. In addition to a school, MMS played a key role in my life. Not only was MMS my home but also my church starting from second grade up until I graduated high school.…

When I started Unity High School I thought that we were going to get a lot of work from my classes, and that work was going to be extremely hard. I also thought that I wasn't going to have any free time to do anything because of that, but it turned out to be wrong because the teachers give us a good amount of work but its not really hard. I thought that making friends in Unity would be hard in a sort of way but it was quit easy because everyone else was trying to make friends too. When I first got to Unity I also thought that there was going to be a few school clubs, but there is a good amount of clubs that students can join if they want to join some type of club. I think as a person I have grown more since first coming to Unity because I…

When the second week of February arrived, Kayla and I left Sioux Falls around six in the morning. Arriving in Brookings a hour later, we were driven to the campus and taken to a building with a large gathering room that held other schools whom had already arrived before us. We were assigned seats in specific sections—ranging from Bass, Tenor, Alto, or Soprano. Hours of practicing went by, and we had reached the last few hours of the day. Driven to a performance hall; we ran through all the songs once more before the final…

For the past two years, on the 1st Monday of the month I have participated in Site Council meetings at my high school along with other Associated Study Body (ASB) members, our principal, school administrators, parents, and teachers. Frequently it was brought up that minorities were not as involved in our school as majority groups. ASB has always been dominated by white students and as a Latina, I found it very intimidating when I joined.…

All throughout school I strived to be a great student, always trying my best and never giving up. I didn’t really have any life changing moments that shaped me into who I am today that is, until freshman year. That year everything changed for me I was faced with challenges I never had to face before. My brother and I are three in a half years apart and he went to Horizon High School for his freshman and sophomore year. He was a troublemaker to say the least didn’t have the best reputation so all the teachers there thought that I was just like him. When I started there no one really knew my name and then once they saw my last name they started to be rude to me and say rude things to me. Even when I did good on work I still got a bad grade just because the…

School of Rock. Seeing those words on my calendar made me dread the weeks to come. My parents had signed me up for an activity, once again, without asking my opinion first. My friends would be going, but that didn’t make it sound better. I would be put in a band with people I didn't know. I’d always left being outgoing and meeting new people for my friends to take care of, but this week it seemed to be on my to-do list.…

My love for music began in middle school. At that time, I was socially awkward with very few friends. To compensate, I buried myself in music. My dedication led to many honors and admiration from my peers. However, when I got to high school, my relationship with music fundamentally changed. The arrival of an overly demanding teacher coupled with a long episode of depression robbed me of my passion to play. As time progressed, the pain I felt became too much to bear, and I became desperate for an outlet in which I could express myself positively. My quest led me to music once more, but classical was no longer the genre of choice. It was in hip hop and rap music that I found the will to overcome mental illness.…
