Crime analysis is the systematic study of crime and disorder problems as well as other police related issues. The discipline of crime analysis began in London in the early 19th century, but it was not until the early 1900’s that crime analysis was practiced in the United States. During the 1970’s, publications about crime analysis techniques and functions came out, and more police departments began to formalize crime analysis. Nowadays crime analysis is well known; analysis is one of the most effective tools to support law enforcement today. Since the Military Police agency is on a military installation, all policies and procedures pertaining the Crime Analysis Unit will be created in conjunction with the Department of Defense (DOD) policies, as well as Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) policies. The Crime Analysis Unit will have standard operating procedures (SOP) that will contain information of what to do and how to complete daily tasks. For instance the standard operating procedure of the two data entry personnel will contain a step-by-step process of how to properly enter data to the computer system. These standard operating procedures will be created by the supervisor and the two civilians because they are the ones with the most knowledge and experience. The standard operating procedures will be reviewed and updated quarterly. The main goal of having standard operating procedures is to have a step by step of how to perform a specific task for in case a person is absent another one can step in and continue working where the other person left off. Standard operating procedures also provide simple answers for personnel with questions, if the questions are more complex and is not covered on the standard operating procedure, the person should ask the supervisor or any of the two other analysts, and they should take note so this information can be added when is time to update them. The Crime Analysis Procedure will also include the legal process of collection of data that will be used for evaluation. All the data collected should be in accordance to the state, federal, and military laws and regulations of Camp Lejeune. Every procedure and SOP will be created and reviewed by the supervisor and the assisting analysts, once clear and reviewed they will be disseminated and enforced throughout the Crime Analysis Unit personnel and the Military Police Agency.
